I see a lot of threads on alt.os.linux.mandriva in which the top post in
the thread starts with a “Re:”. For instance, an op by the name of
“Aardvark” recently posted a reply to a conspiracy-theory spammer (why?
I dunno) named “Kernel Black Flag”. I access this usenet group via
news.sysmatrix.net, using Seamonkey 1.1’s newsreader, and a search shows
Am I not getting some posts, or are people just playing games?

Yep, normal Usenet application response when someone REplies. 🙂
Using http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search we see lots of authors
named Aardvark had made posts.
Results 1 – 10 of about 28,400 for author:Aardvark
Well a quick advanced_group_search does not show “Kernel Black Flag”
for me so I’ll assume Kernel Flag has marked his posts to not be archived.

Was Aardvark replying via Google Groups by any chance?. Google groups is one
of, if not THE, worst ways to access Usenet, their way of allowing people
to reply to questions in Usenet groups allows the threads to be broken very
easily. Many, many people have contacted Google requesting that they follow
standard practice but no, GG have to go off at a tangent and p*** everybody
off on newsgroups. Best advice to anyone is get a proper newsreader and a
proper newsserver and do it correctly.

You answered your own question above when you correctly identified it as
spam. Some servers (Google and Supernews for example) have good spam
filters, others such as my ISP (TDS) do not. Some such as Altopia
deliberately do not filter spam…
On the other hand, if you are seeing lots of on topic threads starting
with “RE:” then your problem is most likely a poor incoming feed at
sysmatrix. (Or some other server problem) Less likely, but possible if
Seamonkey has filters, is that you have set one on a frequent thread
starter in this group. Least likely possibility is an actual bug in your

I’d like to quote that on my GG page (please visit link in sig).

Most likely the news servers are removing spam and kookposts.
Before they get that done some idiot has responded to the nonsense,
and that lives.

Ok by me. Yes, Gort will do nicely. Just had a look at your site, hope
something good at Google comes out of it.

Thanks. It won’t; all we can do is not cooperate. Responding to GG
posters is cooperating.

Thank you for answering one of the many questions I hadn’t yet gotten
around to asking!
