OK, so I'll rebuild the kernel with 'Support for frame bufer devices'
turned on, VESA built in and ATI Radeon as a module and try that.

I note that in the bottom two options, all the Logo config options are
built in to the kernel, but more strangely the 'Bootsplash
Configuration' options doesn't work at all. It has an arrow, but nothing
happens which I select it and hit enter.

Nope, nothing there.

Off to rebuild and reboot.
