Default acpi-cpufreq fails to load

Since I upgraded to a 2.6.16 kernel from gentoo-sources I find that the
module acpi-cpufreq. I just updated from -r3 to -r4 but I still get

# modprobe -v acpi-cpufreq
insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r4/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq
(/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r4/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko):
No such device

I found several pointers on the web about similar things in Fedora but
they recommend to add a driver to /etc/cpuspeed.conf that doesn't exist
here or to add cpufreq.debug=7 somewhere to see more output but I don't
know where.

Any idea how to find out more or how to solve this?
Peter.

CPUFREQ is busted in 2.6.16.x.... it gets better with later versions, even
works in 2.6.17.x.... but it's no where as good as it was in 2.6.15.6!!!
