Default BIOS updating without an MSWormOS boot disk?

How does one flash their BIOS, without an MSWormOS boot disk available.
There's an update available for mine, but Tyan's instructions all use a
BIOS flash utility, and it's an MSDOS executable. They don't address the
question in their BIOS flash or Linus FAQs mail-backs, either, but I have
it submitted to human tech support address now. (I mentioned that even if
I DID have such a disk, my ability to legally use it would be in question,
and rest upon the legal enforceability of EULAs, as it's unlikely I could
agree to the MS EULA.)

Does FreeDOS work for BIOS flashes? If so, where can I download it? Is
there a better Linux solution? Should I go look on the BIOS
manufacturer's site as well? (Guess it couldn't hurt.. AMIBIOS, in this
case.)

I haven't tried but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

I'll have to buy some cheap (used) motherboard to experiment with; unless of
course, someone has any info on the subject and want to share his/her
experiences.

Norberto

A Freedos bootcd/floppy should work.

I can't see why not. In fact, I think some mobo manufacturers use it as a
bootstrap for their flash updating floppy disk images.

You did not even tried googling for it don't you?

That's true! Asus uses freedos on its booteable CD disc.

Worked perfectly for me just the other day.

No, I didn't, but I wanted to get some info on whether it worked or not,
and while I was getting that, asking for the site, given I didn't know it,
seemed reasonable. (Otherwise I would not have done so w/o googling.)

Thanks.

Thanks! I believe I will try it, and write back to Tyan suggesting they
include that in their Linux and BIOS Flash FAQs. (I already suggested
they mention something about it, when I asked, but this should help
confirm that it works, and I'm guessing they'll add it.. but I'm going to
try it on my Tyan first, so I too can vouch for it.. It's about a $400
dual Opteron board, so if it doesn't, and you hear a loud wailing from
over Phoenix, AZ, US way, and you don't see me on the group/list for
awhile, you know it didn't work. <g>)

Hello,

I've only partially caught this thread, but, here is something everyone
mightfind
useful.

100% bios that is geared to and even design for linux based systems. Not
every motherboard support 'linuxbios' but nevertheless, it is worthy of
dissemination:
