Default Boot error after Gentoo install on VMware

Have you compiled chipset and SCSI support into the kernel (not as modules)?

Default Boot error after Gentoo install on VMware

Hi all,

I've been doing a gentoo install on vmware workstation 4.5 from a livecd
and following the handbook from gentoo.org but on a reboot I am getting
the following error:

VFS: cannot open root device "801" or 08:01
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01

I am using kernel 2.4.28-r5

The drive comes up as a SCSI device /dev/sda.

lilo contains the following entries:

root=/dev/sda

image=/boot/kernel-2.4.28-gentoo-r5
root=/dev/sda3
label=Gentoo
read-only

I tried messing about with the root= setting between the different
partitions (boot is on sda1, root is on sda3) but no luck.

Any ideas?
