I'm looking to get a dedicated server running gentoo. My budget is
very low, but my requirements are fairly high. I'm looking to get at least a 1.6GHz processor, 384MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, and 20GB of monthly bandwidth. Any recommendations or suggestions? PS. This is a repost, I did get a copy of my first attempt. Appologies to those who get this a 2nd time. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

Just to make sure, it is possible to install Gentoo on a server from
within RedHat, right? Every hosting company I've seen only offers RedHat. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

Do they use Gentoo for any package?
(I looked in the Server section and their "root server" package uses RH9 - Ive been moving away from RH towards Gentoo especially since RH9 is no longer supported). -- Aj. Sys. Admin / Developer -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

1&1 don't use anything else other then RH9 as far as I am aware, sent
emails to ask about a gentoo install but got no reply. They also use Plesk on the build that only has a single licence - so if you wanna host more then one site you gonna need to start to edit the configs... Problem is that Plesk gets a grip into everything and becomes a nightmare to remove from what I hear... We use servers from http://www.vr.org - They are due to get some again soon but I have to say - the box is nice and quick, the bandwidth it sits on is quick (downloads 11mb easy in under 20 seconds) and the support team there are brilliant.... You get the live cd in a box - details to log in and then off you do - you can stage the box however you want to (But isn't the reason we use Gentoo due to being able to stage 1 it ???) ![]() Mal -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

hower the website is only in german but you could get what you are looking for there there you have a nice feature called remoteconsole, wich lets you do things before linux is up and running or when you messed up your linux they just offer a preinstalled suse linux, but you could then install gentoo by yourself -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

I'm looking at an offer from ValueWeb
(http://www.valueweb.com/dedicated/dedicated-hosting.htm). The server comes with Fedora, but I've found a couple how-tos on installing gentoo over RedHat, or another Linux distro. Does anyone have any opinions of ValueWeb, or experience installing gentoo over an existing linux install? -Jeff -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |
