I have seen this topic and have to say that I often use the emerge -u
system. I tend to stay away from the world command - is this a good thing or bad ? mal -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

It depends. When you update system, you pick only programs that are in the core system configuration. Other application programs on your system will be ignored and not updated. If you want to keep running old programs, that's your choice, but you will miss out on any security, bug, and usability fixes for a lot of applications. I would recommend that you at least issue 'emerge -pu world' to see what you are missing. Then you can make a more logical decision. That seems like a nice command.... I was just making sure that I knew
what the switches did and I found this : --update (-u) Updates packages to the most recent version available. Note that --update does not have full functionality yet. It will not automatically update dependencies of packages in the world file, unless they too are in the world file. What functionality is the update option still missing if any - or is it safe to use ? Ta. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |
