Default Gentoo and Zoneminder feedback

I have just done my first couple Gentoo installs (not on this machine yet)
and I really like what I see. Afriend of mine has a need for a security
system in his business, and Zoneminder looks like the package to use. Just
wondering if anyone has any feedback on this software, as I have never used
it. We are looking at an 8 camera system with two of them having sound
capabilities. The computer will be an Athlon XP system with a mirrored RAID
setup for Gentoo, and another large drive for storing the video capture. The
system will be used for little else, if anything. I am thinking a 2600+ CPU
and 512MB RAM should be more than enough to run this system. It will also
have a DVD writer in case the need arises to take evidence to court or to
law enforcement.

My questions are; does anyone have any feedback, good or bad, about this
setup? Any cameras or capture cards to stay away from to avoid compatibility
problems? Are there any other Gentoo packages that are similar to Zoneminder
that would work better?

Thanks for any feedback.

Chris
