Default small glitches I cant seem to fix

Im not sure if anyone can help me, I am new to gentoo, previously been a
Mandrake guy but wanted to do something different. Ive gotten my system
built and its nice. There are a few things I would like to change but not
sure how.

1. I run KDE with a child panel at the bottom for various applications.
However the icons are huge. I have messed with the icon size in kcontrol
but it has no effect on the ones on the child panel.

2. when I go into a shell it has $bash but if I run env-update
source /etc/profile it goes to my login@localhost. Does it need to say
bash, Ive always had it say my login with Drake

3. ymessenger has no sound. Alsa is installed and working. Also, I installed
the unstable 1.06.1 version and now when i do an emerge world it wants to
downgrade it to 1.04. How do I get sound and how do I get it not to
downgrade. I would prefer to use ymessenger over kopete or gaim due to it
being what I am used to.

Any help with any of these would be appreciated. All in all gentoo is
awesome. It takes a while to build with many times it can all go south for
someone not familiar with it, but I plan on sticking with it.

A few more things I forgot about...I have nvidia card with the kernel and
glx installed and splash screen going. But I am only getting about 10-15
frames a second on glxgears. The memory size is in my xorg.conf, but still
its slow. Secondly, on kdm, only root shows up as a clickable
selection...any way to fix these?

I'm still a Mandrake user on my main computer, except that I run Mdk
Cooker because I like living life on the edge

Have you tried right-clicking on the child panel and looking at its
properties? Seems to me that was how you modified the icon size of child
panels in KDE.

That has to do with your ~/.bashrc file. You need to add this line to your
..bashrc:
.. /etc/profile
and every time you open a shell, all those settings will be restored.
Alternately you could open a "login shell" but I kind of like having my
profile read every time I use bash, regardless of shell.

Do you have sound on anything else?

As for emerging world, let me guess. You used ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
emerge ymessenger to get it. As I'm sure someone else will quickly point
out, the preferred way is to use your package.unmask file in /etc/portage
IIRC.

Brainbeer has offered us the following clue :

10-15 fps is quite slow. I get 320 fps with my Athlon XP3000 with nforce
chipset.

This is part of my xorg.conf :

Section "Module"

# This loads the DBE extension module.

Load "dbe" # Double buffer extension

# This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
EndSubSection

# This loads the video 4 Linux module

Load "v4l"

# This loads the Type1 and FreeType font modules

Load "type1"
Load "freetype"

Load "xtt"
Load "speedo"

# This loads the GLX module
Load "glx"
# This loads the DRI module
Load "dri"

Load "GLcore"

EndSection

Section "dri"
Mode 0666
EndSection

You should also compile the kernel with the right options.

To decide which user appears on kdm, start the KDE control center in
superuser mode (kdesu kcontrol) and go to "system administration",
"connexion management", "users" (sorry, my menu is in French, I translated
more or less well) then you can decide which user may appear and which
image is associated to them.
There is certainly a CLI way or a .conf file to do that. Some extremists
here won't like you run kcontrol in superuser mode, follow my eyes,
(obviously some like it since there is a superuser button in the KDE menu).

Does the glxgears program give any errors? Follow up on those. I have had
several problems with this and solved them (though my card is a Matrox):

1. Make sure you have this in xorg.cong:
Section "dri"
Mode 0666
EndSection
2. Make sure the memory size is correct. I had to ********ly include this
line in xorg.conf:
VideoRam 16384
3. Can't remember others.

packages in a while
