Hi,
transcode is permanently upgrading to transcode-0.6.12-r1 and downgrading (depending on k3b?) to transcode-0.6.11*. It is a little bit nasty. Any idea how to avoid this behaviour? Regards Juergen -- Juergen Rose <rose@rz.uni-potsdam.de> Max-Delbrueck-Zentrum -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

Hi Juergen,
try emerging k3b with "USE="-encode" emerge -pv k3b". This will emerge k3b without encoding functionality. I don't know if you need that, if not your transcode should be fixed with this. brgds, Marc -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

echo '>=media-video/transcode-0.6.12' > /etc/portage/package.mask
And then any time you notice an upgrade to k3b unmask transcode to see if the dependency has gone away (or check the ebuild). It's quite a difficult portage bug causing it. It's partially fixed in the >=sys-apps/portage-2.0.51_pre12. If you are running _pre12, try moving k3b to the start of your world file. A complete fix, however, wont be around till at least 2.0.52. I have a fix, but it's tied in with a partial rewrite which are not yet fully ready to be integrated with portage. And then there's the testing period... Or, even better if you don't want to wipe out your file: echo '>=media-video/transcode-0.6.12' >> /etc/portage/package.mask ^ ^ Enjoy, -- /\/\ ( CR ) Collins Richey \/\/ fly Independence Air - they run Linux -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

I take it you haven't read the RFC on mailing list etiquette? Or perhaps just
not the section about regarding correcting "spelling" mistakes? Regards, Jason Stubbs -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

His post wasn't solely to point out a spelling error. If someone
copy-pasted your command, he could erase his own package.mask file. He corrected a command, not a simple spelling error. Christoph -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

Oh come on. As hesitant as I am to stick up for Collins, the
difference between > and >> may be not clear to everybody. Who was to know that the original was a mistake anyway? Collins provided a bit of extra information, without a hint of rudeness, and you had a go at him. I don't think it was necessary. Max. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

Yes, it has nothing to do with spelling, but even I didn't read closely enough, since he suggested making the directory first, so obviously there would be nothing there to wipe out. -- /\/\ ( CR ) Collins Richey \/\/ fly Independence Air - they run Linux -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |

Yes, you're right. I apologise for that. My assumption was that anybody that
new about portage.mask would know the difference between ">" and ">>". From now on, I'll do my best to not let my 'personal'* life affect my responses. Regards, Jason Stubbs * personal meaning person to person... -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list |
