brands of windows (both OS and software proprietary, hard to salvage), of
course unix ... and there is the "lsb" package which actually tries to
create at least a set of symlinks to satisfy "linux standard base"
compatibility.
If you want to roll your own packages from tarballs/source, you may try
checkinstall - which is as well available for multiple distributions.
