Default dvd lableled as cdrom

I've replaced my faulty CDRW unit by a new Sony DVDRW unit, but on KDE's
desktop the unit it's still labelled as a cdrom.

I've changed the mount point in fstab from /mnt/cdrom to /mnt/dvd
without success (i mean, the drive mounts ok, but it's still labelled as
a CDROM)

Harddrake recognizes the unit, vendor, model etc... but says Type: cdrom

It is not an issue as i've got not problems neither burning nor seeing
dvd contents. But i would like it to be labelled for what it is.

On the other hand, i've got issues accessing to it. It burns CD's at 6x
when the drive is 48x, and watching films is a pain (burning is the
biggest issue as i will not use this computer for playing films).

I think this is because the drive is slaved to a HD. When i had the
harddisc slaved, i had also had access problems (files where copied at a
rate of 1Mb/s, now being as secondary master, the rate has speeded up 5
times or more). Is this normal in slaved units or do i have a hardware
problem here? (i know, better post this to any hardware group, but sure
there will be someone who knows here).

Now i've got 2 hard drives (40Gb,80Gb) and this dvd drive, so something
has got to be slaved. If this matters, the machine is a AMDK7@1,2Ghz
with 770Mb ram. Mobo is transcend probably (just guessing right now as
i'm not at home).

Just something i left out. If I uncheck the "mounted cdrom" and
"unmounted cdrom" icons in the desktop configuration, the icon
dissapears, so KDE is really thinking it's a cdrom.

Checking and unchecking "mounted dvd" and "unmounted dvd" does nothing.

[snip]

Right click on the icon and change properties.

Six times standard CD speed or six times standard DVD speed?
What is the media rated at?

urpmi hdparm; man hdparm

If you have the choice put the device that is reading on one cable and
the device that is writing on the other. Looks like you don't have
a choice.

have you actually tried that on a kde device icon?

rename (F2) will give me a error. right click will show me a properties
window without any possible editing.

I would say 6 times the cd speed. k3b asked me for the cd speed of the
drive, so i think that is using that measure. Also, sometimes it got
peaks to 10x, and the max DVD writing of the drive is 8x. So i am pretty
sure that it was CD writing speed.

not sure what i've got to be looking for. the parameters seem greek to me.

It is a cdrom isn't it? Just becasue it's also a dvd/cd burner doesn't change that.

So change the label if you just can't stand it.

Then change the label.

So, go into your burning program and change the default values to whatever you want.

On the same cable, they couldn't both work at the same time (just 1
channel). Now they can.

Normally it's better to have the HD's on one channel and the burner(s) on
another. The only exception would be if you were doing on the fly copies
from 1 cd to another cd. These you would want on seperate channels. IOW's
configure your machine so that the drives you copy back and forth from the
most are on seperate ide channels.

I do not understand the problem ... just change the label and/or the
icon. Most DVDs are dual, so both are correct.

Your media may have a speed limit. I have some old CDRW discs that
cannot be burned faster than 4x.

Yes, E/IDE|ATAPI ****eth for chaining hard drives and/or other
devices on the same Bus channel. :-) That is why I use SCSI hard
drives and E/IDE|ATAPI CD and DVD drives. I could use SCSI CD and
DVD drives on the same SCSI channel as my SCSI hard drives with no
problem since SCSI is designed with multiple devices in mind. But
SCSI CD and DVD drives are scarce and very expensive. SCSI cards and
peripherals are not el-cheepo parts (IIRC my Adaptec U160 controller
and the attached Maxtor Atlas 36GB drive totalled over $300, close to
$400) so one has to think of it as an investment in multitasking
hardware. If one wants, or has to use for financial reasons, the
el-cheepo "stuff" then one should stay with E/IDE|ATAPI.

i don't know what kde version have all of you got, but i never could
change a device icon label neither on kde 3.2 nor 3.3. if can't be
changed, i supose it will stay that way...

i wouldn't have asked this question in the first place if it was as easy
as renaming it!

what i wonder is why there is a differenced cdrom and dvd device icon
configuration on the desktop if it's all the same...

when i had 2 cdroms, i had the two hard drives on the same channel and
the two cdroms on the other... and i had access issues copying to the
second hard drive (as now i have burning with the dvd)...

the first hard drive has the main system patitions and the second hard
drive has home, so i need both at full-speed.

what do you mean... that my 48x dvd drive (when writing cds) and my 52x
blank cds can't make it past 10x??

i think it's obvious there is a problem there! correct me again if i'm wrong.

i wonder then why is this the standard... oh wait 'cause it's cheap! :P

I don't use KDE, just IsceWM, but I just logged out and relogged in to KDE
and changed the label from CD-ROM to DVD in a few seconds. Right click,
Properties, change label, done.

It was here.

If you don't want both, delete one, add it ten times under different
names. Whatever floats your boat.:-)
