Hi,
i burned mandriva linux on a dvd , but my laptop can't boot from this
dvd , and i haven't a floppy drive is there any way to make bootable cd
and use it to start linux set up from hard disk or non bootable dvd?

Hi,

Are you sure this DVD drive is not bootable? Did you check your BIOS
settings to make sure they are set/enabled to boot from CD Rom, etc.?

I'm thinking your laptop drive is a combination CD/DVD (as is mine)
and, if you have burned Mandriva properly, it should boot.

Why not try to burn the Mandriva ISO *as an image* (not as data) on a
CD-R, check your boot sequence in BIOS to make sure your laptop can
boot from CD/DVD drive, and give it another shot?

To burn ISO to disc I suppose you try Active@ ISO Burner. this freeware
soft is quick, easy to use and very reliable

Find an image called boot.iso on the installation DVD, and
burn that to a CD. It's only about 14MB. It gives you a
choice of several installation methods, including hard disk
install. Hard disk install using boot.iso is my favorite
method even if I had bootable CD/DVD, etc.

Thanks all for your response,
i had burnt the dvd as data , and it's clearly that is the
problem,because i burnt the boot.iso on cd as "Robert M" said and
succeeded to boot from it then chosen to install from dvd,the setup
program didnot identify the dvd
i will try to burn it again as iso and try.

If you browse the DVD contents and see only one .iso file on it then
you'll know you burned it as a copy of the image file. Most burning
software will offer the option to "burn image"; that's the one you wanna
use to expand it in order to have a bootable DVD. I go a step further
and let K3b compare and verify checksums of all individual files within
the image and the DVD-R disc itself(in Windows you'd have to mount the
image file with Daemon Tools and verify with another utility).

i burnt the boot.iso image on cd , then boot with it to install
mandriva 2007 from its iso file
(mandriva-free-2007-DVD.iso) on hard disk , the install program
requested the path of the iso file of mandriva when i gave it , issued
an error "could not load program in memory"

It would help us help you if we knew if you have an SATA, ATA, SCSI, or
other hard disk.

Off the top of my head, without enough information to go on, I would try
pressing F1 when the first install screen pops up, and entering 'alt0
noapic acpi=off' or 'alt1 noapic acpi=off' at the LILO boot prompt. It
sounds like your type of hard drive *might* not be supported by the
default kernel that the Mandriva 2007 install program uses.

Also, filenames are case sensitive, and if you are moving from Windows
to Linux you might be mistakenly using backslash (\) instead of a
forward slash (/) as a separator in the path to the file.

Mostafa, if you have trouble with DVD, another solution is to start again
but use a CD-R (not DVD) and burn the CD version from this page
http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/free

It is 4 CD's. (Again, make sure you burn as an *image*).

All you have to do then is make sure your boot sequence allows booting
from CD and stick the CD #1 in your drive; reboot and off you are in the
install process.

I am assuming that your DVD drive doubles as a CD drive. Doing the
install this way should be easy.
