Do the following:
wc /home/*/dead.letter If you get a similar message, the easiest solution would be to remove the affected file, unless the owner needs the content of the file. $HOME/dead.letter is normally created when the user terminates a mail program in the middle of creating a new outbound message. There are a number of common programs or commands that whine about multibyte character issues.
