Default jiggling icons

About three months ago, there was a thread about jiggling icons. I
didn't see a resolution.

I am wondering if anyone found a way to stop this problem.

I installed 2008.1 last night. The icons on the desktop wiggle all over
the place when I open one of them.

Is there any new information on this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Have you updated everything? Depending on what you installed,
you may have over 1,750 software packages to update.

For ease in setting up your mirrors/repositories
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/
make sure the OS version is correct.

Cheers!

What desktop are you using? I use KDE 3.5.9.

I haven't noticed movement when I open a launcher, but I have set up KDE to
change wallpaper regularly. The icons jiggle for a second or two each time
it changes. When I enquired about it, I was told it was a feature, and
likely to be around for a while. I tried KDE 4 briefly, and didn't notice
anything there.

When running Xplanet on the default update setting of every 10 minutes, the
icons jiggle with each update, i.e. every 10 minutes.

Jim - have you answered the wrong message, or something?

Doug.

I set the mirrors using easy urpmi right after the install. All packages
are up to date. I used mirrors for 2008.1.

The computer sitting right next to the jiggling one does not do this.

Only one machine out of four does this.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am using KDE. It says 3.5.9.

I do not do change wallpaper.

I am puzzled because only this machine does this.

By any chance, does the system in question have a different video card
or video chipset than the others? Is Compiz (a.k.a. 3D desktop) in use
on all of them? Perhaps you have identified an X video driver that has
trouble with Compiz, in which case turning off the 3D desktop feature
may alleviate the problem on that box; not all chipset/driver combos
that claim to support direct rendering can actually handle running
Compiz smoothly, IME.

HTH!

No. When someone I do not recognize as a regular poster to
this newsgroup says "I just installed ***x and have a problem"
my first question is, have you installed all the updates?

Mandriva regularly comes out with 700 MB of updates within
a week or two after a new release, and the install DVD/CDs
have none of them. And new rpm packages installed on a system
that has not been updated may encounter problems due to the
old stuff lying around.

Until the OS and other packages have been updated, there is
little point in trying to diagnose or troubleshoot the less
common problems. Sometimes you get enough information to
suggest where the problem actually is, but if you don't have
that, checking for update status is generally a good idea.

In a recent instance, the OP had not updated, and found he
had 1752 rpm packages awaiting. Even if these had
nothing whatever to do with his problem, getting his system
up to date was probably a good idea, and a good starting
point.

Cheers!

Just as a data point, I have the same problem. The icons do this little
shimmy dance every while-- I have not timed it. It is as if the desktop is
being refreshed or something periodically. The windows open on the desktop
however behave properly.

I think that you might be on to something here.

I do not use compiz. All the systems that I mentioned use nvidia cards.

I am beginning to wonder if I mistakenly deleted something necessary. I
usually remove all other video drivers.

I also wonder if there is a difference between the contents of the DVD
and the 3 CD's.

I can see where my day is going to go.

There is nothing wrong with this approach.

If there is an electrical problem on a motorcycle the first step is
always to make sure that you have good battery that is fully charged.

I installed. Then removed some programs I don't want. Then go to easy
urpmi and find the mirrors. Then do the updates.

Thank you for your suggestions.
