Default playing WMV files?

I have been playing around with trying to get Mandriva to play
WMV files. Yes, been googling groups and web sites, but still don't have
anything that will play...Amarok will play the audio but not the video.

What is the been appz and best way to set to play WMV files. It seems
everything I have seen says it should be a snap, but am having no luck.

Thanks

Mplayer does pretty well.

Don't forget to download the codec package

It is a snap :-) [if you know what you are doing, of course]

What you need first is the win32 codecs.

Presumably, you have already used the GUI tool under the Software
section of the Mandriva Control Center (System -> Configuration ->
Configure your computer) to disable the CD sources and add Mandriva
sources, including updates. If you have not done so, then that is your
first step.

Once you have done the above, configure your *plf* and *plf-nonfree*
sources using the instructions at http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ [ignore the
suggestion about 'urpmi.removemedia -a'. You do not want to do that, as
it will undo step one.] Also, you have already configured your Mandriva
sources in step one, so do not select any of those.

If you are using KDE, then Kaffeine is an excellent media player, and
will play *most* wmv files once you have the win32 codecs installed.
MPlayer will play most if not all wmv files. If it is not installed
already, then you can install it in the same way.

Now you are ready to install win32codecs, and kaffeine and/or Mplayer

Once your sources are configured put "win32' in the search box after
calling up the software install tool using MCC (System -> Configuration
-> Configure your Computer ... from the menu.)

Do the same for Kaffeine / Mplayer.

HTH,

Jim D.

I wonder if the OP is using a 64 bit disto, then you can't *easily* play
WMV, if I recall correctly.

Isn't it sufficient to install 32-bit versions of the player
package and codecs?

All that is needed to play wmv files on the 64bit version is the win32
codecs, and install the 32bit version of whatever media player such as
mplayer.

It's not difficult to do this, one may call it an "easy" solution.

Actually, I believe you can use the 64 bit version of the players with
the codecs. I don't have a 64-bit box in front of my, but I have set up
64 bit machines, and I did not install the 32 bit version of kaffeine.
It worked fine for me. The installation to which I am referring was a
Mandriva 2006 - x86_64 installation. Now one *does* need to install the
32 bit Firefox on a 64 bit machine to get Flash working, etc. That is a
different beast all together.

If you don't mind, could you tell us where that rpm file can be found?
The codecs I've found so far were tarballs with poorly written README files.
