Default Prog to handle DVD with menu?

Is there a program that can handle the playback of a DVD that
has a menu?

I've tried kaffeine, kplayer, lindvd, mplayer, and ogle, but none
shows the DVD menu.

(Some found the soundtrack in the chapters, but none showed
any video).

(The Dvd is a home 'family' DVD, made via Pinnacle Studio 10
under WinXP.)

Try using vlc media player with their plugins "vlc-plugin-dvdnav-xxx" and
"vlc-plugin-ncurses-xxx"

OK - installed that. Checked:

urpmf vlc-plugin-dvdnav*
vlc-plugin-dvdnav:/usr/lib/vlc/access/libdvdnav_plugin.so
etc.
[root@localhost mab]# urpmf vlc-plugin-ncurses*
vlc-plugin-ncurses:/usr/lib/vlc/gui/libncurses_plugin.so
etc.

But although VLC appears to be accessing the DVD drive
(/media/cdrom), no DVD menu appears, nor is there any audio to
be heard, nor any video to be seen, though VLC's time counter is
moving along....

Looked at 'man vlc' & 'vlc --help', but not clear how to use VLC!

urpmf shows you what's in the urpmi database. That is, from the database of what's
available. It has no relation to what's actually been installed on your system.

To confirm you have the plugins installed, use
rpm -qa vlc-plugin*

I just tested vlc, with a dvd. I selected File/Open Disc. On the disc type,
DVD (menus), was already selected, and the device name was already set correctly,
so I just pressed ok. The dvd menu screen came up, where I had the choices
of Play, Scene selection, or Language selection.

vlc-plugin*

rpm -qa vlc-plugin*
vlc-plugin-a52-0.8.6c-3plf2008.0
vlc-plugin-ncurses-0.8.6c-3plf2008.0 vlc-plugin-dvdnav-0.8.6c-3plf2008.0

the disc type, DVD (menus), was already selected,

All OK here so far...

pressed ok.

Mmm. Well, the device name shown is "/dev/hdc" (and under
'Advanced Options': "dvd:///dev/hdc"), and if I leave it like
that, 'OK' gives:

"Unable to open 'dvd:///dev/hdc'"

If I change the 1st above to "/dev/hdd", 'OK' then VLC does
access the DVD, but all I then see is a blank blue VLC screen,
with the blue progress blob along the bottom crazily bobbing from
one position to another, rapidly, and the counter at the LH end
alternating between 0:00:nn where nn varies rapidly in random
order! Occasionally the screen flashes black. No DVD access
during this.
If I press the Menu button at bottom right, nothing happens.

If I select View/Playlist, a window showing:

"General
dvd:///dev/hdd ( 0:00:12)"

appears.

Just tried a newspaper freebie DVD (has no menu).

With this, I hear the sound as normal, but still get a blank
blue screen. Progress bar moves normally.

urpmq xine
No package named xine
(Same with 'urpmi xine')

Did you mean amarok? Tried that. It played back the sound, but
no sign of any menu - or general video.

(Reported "Some media could not be loaded...")

How do you recommend driving amarok to see menu and video,
please?
