Default Root Missing KDE Panels -KDE Window Manager Freeze Ups and New RPMPACKAGE Unresponsive in New Mandriva 2006 Powerpack

Hi all,

After logging in as "root", all of the KDE panels are missing. I can't
believe how much memory is being ****ed out by the Mandriva 2006 KDE
desktop window manager. When logged in as "user" and I request 3
different wizards are to open, i.e install, update & remove - I can't
read the wording. Freeze ups are common.

I am trying to install additional rpms. However, the rpm package manager
starts up, prompts me for the CD. The CD light stays on for some time
and then the rpm wizard dies out - with no rpm installation. Totally
unresponsive.

I have SuSE 10 installed on a different partition and it's KDE desktop
and rpm managers never freeze up. Even if I have the install, update and
remove windows open, I can minimize and maximize and read all of the
labels and rpm package names. Since Mandrake 10 and up this has been
getting worse.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

You shouldn't log in as root.

How much memory (in KB) is being '****ed out' of the desktop
window manager ??? Is it 100Kb ? 1 MB ? .. More ??
Try run the program 'top before and after and post what is being used.

What system are you using and what is your total RAM ??

Have you looked at /var/log/messages for any hint of what's happening ?

If it works with your Suze installation, then you've misconfigured
something.. KDE should run the same regardless of which kernel you're using.

Default Fixed Root Missing KDE Panels-KDE Window Manager Freeze Ups & NewRPM PACKAGE Unresponsiveness in New Mandriva 2006 Powerpack

Oops. I should have reviewed the Mandriva 2006 Errata page. There are
bugs with X and the high CPU usage.

----------------------------
Upon my fourth reinstallation the red root login window appeared with
all KDE panels.

I can't believe how much memory is being ****ed out by the Mandriva 2006
KDE desktop window manager.

Sorry I was thinking about X. There appears to be bugs in X. which
appears to hog the CPU.

-----------------------------------------------
MY RAM 128MB. of RDRAM not SDRAM.
I am using a Dell Dimension XPSB733r purchased in 2000. Since I broke my
arm I'm not working. As soon as I get back to work I will buy a newer
computer with lots of RAM and a larger drive.

In addition, my fstab entry was set to back to /mnt/hdc and I can now
install.

Thanks Jim,

If you're using the default Xorg that came with Mandriva then yes there
are TONS of bugs. There is a VERY HUGE post on the mandriva club forums
about this. It also recommends using my Xorg rpms that I've backported
from Cooker as they were built by myself due to being asked by several
Mandriva employees to backport them for testing purposes. It seems that
my builds happen to fix most of the bugs. My rpm repo is located at
http://seerofsouls.com and there was an Xorg update as of yesterday in
fact. There are other things I've built that fix problems within 2006 as
well, such as a new acpid rpm, and a new kat rpm that is part of the
KDE-3.5 rpms I've built for 2006. If you want to upgrade to KDE-3.5
please make sure you read the how-to that is linked on the site under the
3.5 section for 2006.
