Default switching from ubuntu

I'm just starting to test Ubuntu as I had a problem getting to the
Mandriva download area. I'm far enough into it to think I want to
continue but I'm not particularly fond of the way Ubuntu works as
compared to a trial I gave Mandriva a year or two ago.

So, my question is--as I've never done this sort of thing outside the MS
world--how does one remove Ubuntu and install Mandriva or is it as
simple as the installation will begin, "see" the other version and
prompt me to replace or add to it?

Thanks
Tim

Generally, you just boot up from the installation CD for the
new OS and go from there. If you choose to format and
install the new system in the partitions where the old
system was, the old system will simply be gone. If you
choose to install the new system on partitions separate from
the old system, and if you set up bootloader configuration
to handle both old and new, then you end up with dual boot.

It is as simple as telling MDK to install itself where Ubuntu was. You may
want to consider a dual boot for a time to compare.

Thanks to both you and Robert...basically the same suggestion. I must
say, now that I'm into day two of the OS, I'm really looking forward to
using it more and more and, eventually, eliminating MS. My main problem
is simply going to be syntax and learning what's good and what's not in
the Linux world. All of it is, of course, new to me but, I've already
gone through a quick install of Thunderbird 1.5 as it happened by
default when I clicked on install. A little research and I uninstalled
it and installed the new 2.0 which is what I had meant to do.

Anyway, thanks again to both of you for the help. If I may add an off
topic question...the one thing which will keep me in MS land for a while
is the lack of a good PDA which works with Linux. I know the older
Palms work but I want a higher end unit. I understand Palm is working
on a Linux version of their Treo line and hope to have it on the market
by the end of the year so that will be my target unless someone knows of
something else which will work?

Back up your info first.

Make a note of your partitions - what they are and where they are (you do
have seperate partitions don't you?). Put your 1st mandriva disc in and
restart your computer. when it gets to the partition part do it manually
and only mount your /home partition but all the others can be mounted and
formatted as you want.
