Default Voice Dictation software

Has anyone found a good software package that does Voice Dictation or
Speech to text. This would be something someone could speek into a
michrophone and have it appear as text in a word processor.

I am also looking for a good text to speech program. This program would
take printed text and read to someone.

As always thanks for your input

Klutz

So far, Xvoice (http://xvoice.sourceforge.net) is the only working option,
although there are a few on the horizon. We have just been fortunate enough

on the site shortly, but in the meantime, I can e-mail you a copy. For
Mandriva users, it pretty well brings the project up to the present time.
You can write to me with the above username and the address hotkey dot net
dot au.

Xvoice uses the old ViaVoice for Linux RPMs that appeared about Mandrake 8,
which created a few problems, particularly availability, but we can give
you some leads about that. I find that although not as good as Dragon
under Windows, it is perfectly adequate so long as I pronounce distinctly,
and that is with a U.S. English voice model and an Australian accent. We
have one German user with a German version, and I think one in French. The
last I heard about porting Dragon under Wine, there is a problem with Wine
accepting the speech data. You can look this up under Wine's program
database.

Xvoice will dictate into any application you choose, and unlike ViaVoice, is
not limited to a dictation pad. As well as dictation, it provides voice
control of application commands, such as "File -> Open," and a mouse grid,
as in Dragon 7. Many of our users are partly incapacitated. You can join
the Xvoice mailing list at
http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/xvoice-user Looking at the
future is the Open Source Speech Recognition Initiative. Their web site
isn't very informative, but they have an active mailing list at
http://harvee.org/mailman/listinfo/ossri

ViaVoice also has a text-to-speech module, but I haven't used it, and demand
for it has been fairly low. I think that others on the xvoice mailing list
may have used it.

I look forward to it. I did a lot of unproductive Googling some time ago.

IBM just aren't interested in the desktop user. All our requests to IBM to
release ViaVoice if they don't want it any more, have been ignored. Their
latest project that I saw, - very worthwhile but of no use to the
workstation user, was to use the ViaVoice engine to synchronize the voices
with the image frames when recording cartoons or animated movies. Before
this, it was all done by hand, frame by frame. They could license that for
big bucks.

There was a project for Gnome a few months back. I have forgotten the
details, but basically they wanted Gnome users to beta-test for them, but
after the beta stage, those same users would need to buy licenses. Sphinx
(also on SourceForge) has been proposed from time to time, unsuccessfully.

The latest hopeful is Julius (http://julius.sourceforge.jp/en/julius.html -
note the "jp" in the URL; the one on the Sourceforge we all know is
entirely different) but you need to provide your own dictionary and
pronunciation databases - the only ones available are in Japanese. It has
been proved to work with the speech databases at http://htk.eng.cam.ac.uk/
That puts it 'way beyond my level of expertise.

I have it here, if you would like to let me have your e-mail address. Mine
is hidden in my reply to Klutz. The ViaVoice RPM is 75 MB. All other
prerequisites are on your CDs or available by URPMI.

You are going to E-Mail a 75 MB attachment??!!!

This is not a good idea, and most would consider it to be an abuse of SMTP.

Only if the MTA accepts one that large.
Some ISPs have "fixed" that practice and rejects it.

Err, no. Xvoice != ViaVoice. The RPM is 187K.

Thanks Simon. No the 75 MB has to be obtained elsewhere. Any interested
parties, enquire on the mailing list:

http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/xvoice-user

I forgot to mention that ViaVoice isn't -or wasn't - a dependency that would
stop installation of Xvoice, but Xvoice can't work without it.
