Default wmv to avi or mpeg. what program?

What are you guys using to convert or rip wmv. files to mpeg or avi? I have
tried to use mplayers memcoder but I can't get it to work. I have also
googled and can't find anything except Microcrap programs. Also are you
getting sick of these sites that you have to pay to get answers to your
questions? I am I guess you can now call it the pay information super
highway.

Use mplayer! first google for the mplayer Hungarian site. Download "all
win32 codecs" - 12.5 MB. Put all these files into - /usr/lib/win32 if you
are using Mandriva 2006. Then install mplayer!
From then on you can enjoy wmv files in Linux. Also I do not pay for any of
this.

I believe Evo wants to edit the wmv files, not simply view them, so she
needs an app to convert them to avi/mpeg/other

I believe your right, but I'm a guy not a she! I have Mplayer all setup and
it's working fine. It just won't convert using mencoder .wmv to avi or
mpeg. Also looked at transcode man pages and can't find anything in there
to suggest converting wmv.

I generally use mplayer or tcextract to dump the audio to a file, mplayer
outputting video to a FIFO and encoding from the FIFO with mpeg2enc, and
then mplex to multiplex the audio file back in.

However, you may want to try tovid (install tovid and tovid-gui from the
PLF repositories) - I believe it handles wmv when you have win32 codecs
installed.

wmv to avi or mpeg. what program?'s a cool scene! Dig it!

Have you installed the Win32 codecs? Did you install them in a place
where mplayer can find them? And does /etc/mplayer/codecs.conf have
entries for the various versions of wmv?

Mplayer is working perfectly and yes I have installed all the codecs. I
think I'm using the wrong or incorrect command at the command line. If you
could give me a hint on what that command is I would greatly appreciate it.
Converting .wmv to either .avi or .mpeg.

thanks

You might try something like this:
mencoder -o <your-output-filename> -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts \
vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2000:vhq <your-wmv-filename>

This will give you an AVI file in Divx5 (MPEG4) format.
