Default Install problems (from bootable CD-RW disc)

I have downloaded
ftp://ftp.quicknet.nl/pub/Linux/ftp.redhat.com/9/en/iso/i386/shrike-i386-disc1.iso
....../shrike-i386-disc2.iso and ....../shrike-i386-disc3.iso and
md5sum-checked them. I have burnt them onto CD-RW discs (....disc1.iso
and ....disc2.iso) and burnt ....disc3.iso onto a CD-R disc.

I have booted the system from disc1 and the linux boot prompt for Red
Hat Linux 9 shows up. I have choosen the alternativ "If you want Install
or Upgrade your system press <Enter>". After doing so I can see

loading vmlinuz ....
loading initrd.img .....

but after that I'm left with a black screen with an blinking cursor in
the upper left corner and nothing more happens.

What kind of problem is this? Do I have to pass any option to the kernel
like "linux <some option>" at the prompt to make it work?

Here's some info about my current Red Hat Linux 7.1 system (from
/var/log/messages)

Jul 23 11:50:46 localhost kernel: Kernel command line: auto

Jul 23 12:10:00 localhost kernel: sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 20x/32x writer
cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

I have put the install media (disc 1) in both

hdc: DM126D DVDROM, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
and
hdd: SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-408B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
with the same result.

I had a similar problem when I first installed this Red Hat Linux 7.1
system to a fresh (empty) partition. Then I had put the install media in
hdd: SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-408B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
but that only gave me a "blue screen" after pressing <enter> at the Red
Hat Linux install boot prompt. It all worked, surprisingly ,when I moved
the install disc to
hdc: DM126D DVDROM, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

You can dedicate the disc1.iso to a CD-R, coz that CD comes in handy lot later on.

Maybe, can you try

linux ide=nodma hdd=ide-scsi

Just a wild guess. The second one it auto detects anyway.

hdd is your CD-RW device I assume from the following output.

You can also burning a CD-R to the disc 1 and see if that is the problem
if the above does'nt work.

No, that didn't work! What I did was, I put a CD-R disc with
shrike-i386-disc1.iso on in my CD-RW unit, I then tried to load the
kernel with "linux ide=nodma hdd=ide-scsi" but was yet again left with
the blinking cursor. Maybe I have to get back to start the installation
from booting with a floppy disc.

I'm surprised to find that the installation problems have worsened for
me since installing Red Hat Linux 7.1. At that time moving the CD-R disc
from hdd to hdc solved the problem. Now neither hcd nor hdd is working.

Try putting the ISO's in a FAT32 partition and install from harddisk.
Might help. V

I'm able to install now after having created an installation boot
diskette. At the installation program kernel load prompt, which it maybe
should be called, I used the no longer do***ented expert command that
gives you the ability to choose installation media, in this case harddrive.

It's interesting that the loading of the installation kernel succeds,
the installation program continues after giving a command at the initial
prompt (the installation program kernel load prompt), when running the
installation program from a floppy disc but not when running from a
cd-rw or cd-r.
