Default Mplayer

I hope I'm in the right group. I recently downloaded RPM's apt and
synaptic from freshrpms.net. I installed apt. I had apt update to get
synaptic. I installed mplayer using synaptic. I can not play any media
files with mplayer logged in as a regular user. I keep getting an error
"cannot initialize video ouptput device." I can play files logged in as
root, but the gui seems to have a distorted look and I can't seem to exit
the program until the video finishes playing. I am a linux newbie. I am
also using Redhat 9.0-2.4.20-8. I tried installing mplayer with the
binary files, but it said I needed libpng and libpng-dev packages(which I
know are installed)

Help me if you can!!
