Default Video card problem-Asus V9520-FC4

I've long been running various flavours of Redhat/Fedora on and old
machine perfectly happily on an old celeron 500 until the motherboard
blew last week. Having replaced the machine with a new machine as
follows:

Gigabyte 8S648FX-775
Asus V9520
P4 3.4 EMT64

and run my recent FC 4 (kernel 2.6.1101.1369) installer, I can't
seem to get the video card behaving. I've tried a few different
versions (7667 back to 4996)of the NVIDIA driver but none works. I
haven't been able to find an Asus supplied Linux driver. I've
tweaked the xorg.conf file in the approved ways but it the best
result so far is that it fails to kick into runlevel 5 at logon.
Curiously, it shows the Nvidia splash screen correctly on boot up.
It's only at logon that it fails.

I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious and would
appreciate the help.

Many thanks;
TD
