I have a couple of questions.

1) If I modify /etc/profile, shouldn't it execute for all users no
matter what their login shell is? And if not, how do I force the
..kshrc to run when a user logs on and starts a terminal? The reason is
that I want to set up some aliases and other things as well as starting
an xterm session.

2) My wireless network is a D-Link running off an ADSL modem. I have
a desktop (WinXP) and a laptop (WinXP) hooked up to it. The desktop
hosts it and the laptop accesses it via it's wireless card. What do I
need for hardware in order for my Linux box to be able to access my
network? I was thinking I could get away with a usb key like this one

I was hoping I could get some advice here. I was able to get a KVM
switch so I can share my monitor, keyboard and mouse. Now I need
something that will either let me split my ADSL off and run it into my
Linux box before it hits the wireless router, or something that will
pick up my wireless network.

Absolutely not. "/etc/profile" is only sourced for Bourne type shells
when they are the login shell. If you are running a GUI login, then you
are not running a login shell (find a command line, and run the command
"ps afuwx" and look for the first/top/parent process with your username.
If it's not a shell like bash, ksh, or sh, then you are not going to do
anything with /etc/profile). See the man page for whatever login shell you are running.

"xterm" is a terminal running under a GUI. If you are not using a text
login (and then starting X via "runx" or "startx"), then you are using a
GUI display manager, such as kdm, gdm, or xdm. This would also be shown
by the runlevel you are using - "grep id /etc/inittab" would show something
other than "id:3:initdefault:". In that case, look at the man page for the
display manager, and you'll likely find it referring to xinitrc, xsession or similar.


The description is rather vague - and I got rid of windoze long before they
invented networking. It sounds as if you need a wireless card in the Linux
box, and need to run Samba to see the windoze networking stuff.


That looks windoze only. You are posting from a search engine, why not
run a simple query with the D-Link name and model number and the word Linux
and see what you can find. Note that USB is not as well supported as other interfaces.


To some extent, it depends on how your ADSL connection is managed - are you
allowed to have multiple systems (if so, a simple network switch, another
twisted pair cable, and a NIC are all that is needed) or not (then you
need something like IP-Masquerade or windoze connection sharing to "hide"
the extra systems from the ISP). Have you looked at the HOWTOs?
