Default Help I got bad Gnome characters

I am running Slackware 9.1 and gnome 2.4 on 2 systems, "A" is a kt4v-L
with AMD 2200 the other "B" a soyo 5EMA board and an AMD K6/2-500
MHz. The problem is that the pixels in the fonts do
not all light up. Characters looks like
braille print. On the splash screen, "Gnome" looks ok but the smaller
fonts for the modules as they load suffer.
BTW this lack of pixel lighting is pervasive for ALL displays except
the splash screen as I mentioned. I have reloaded and verified my
modules against those use in
"A" system and all is identical. "A" system is superb! "B" is not.

When I run KDE on "B" system, the characters are ok, i.e. no font
display problem. I
tried several other windows managers on "B" and they have no problems.
I'm really stuck.
Anyone run into this? Any HELP, please.
