Default dpkg-reconfigure locales - behavior changed between versions

In my first foray in Ubuntu (Hoary) I had a problem in slrn and seeing
line drawn charaters due to Ubuntu using UTF8. I was able to resolve it
after some help by doing the following:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

$ export LC_CTYPE='en_US.ISO-8859-1'
$ export LANG='en_US.ISO-8859-1'

of course the exports above were moved to bash_profile (or bashrc or
somesuch) to make sure it was set in every session

this worked great, but attemtping:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

in 6.06 yields different results, specifically no way to add the
necessary charset, it just does some 'magic' and does not allow any
actual reconfiguring. No switches that I could find in the dpkg-
reconfigure man pages were of any help (of course I could certainly have
missed it)

Any ideas on how to actually reconfigure the locales would be great.

You could try adding this to your profile instead:

alias slrn="env LC_CTYPE=foo LANG=foo slrn"

This should change the locale for slrn only.

Install localeconf.

I dont have problems with any other application as it stands, is there a
reason I should make it slrn specific?

Will do and revert back this evening, thanks Peter.

The only reason is that you'll gradually be left behind as Unicode is
more widely adopted. If you don't notice a problem yet, then there
isn't one; and of course, when you want Unicode you can easily switch
(provided that localeconf works for you.)

Probably not until scoring on all headers is implemented. It was on
the TODO list last time I looked.

At present I feel like an adulterer every time I open tin. :-)

Well, it might, provided I can figure out what to do with it.

After:
apt-get install localeconf

Or rather during, I was asked 2 questions, the first, I don't remember
and the second asked if I wanted to allow debconf to control localeconf,
I answered yes and the install completed.

I still cant figure out how to add the missing locales. I looked for man
pages or doc in /usr/share/doc but nothing useful in the latter and the
former does not exist.

Do I use debconf in some way to change some settings and then run
dpkg-reconfigure?

Sorry, I am stumped.

Not anymore...

sudo dpkg-reconfigure localeconf

Next time I should READ instead of blindly saying yes no...
In any event, the right answers to the questions asked after running the
above provides the ability to change the default local.

Peter, thanks for your patience.
