Default Generic vs. RealTime Kernel

So far, I can see the real time kernel does better (?? faster, more often
??) polling. Is this polling of inputs (usb/audio/etc.) or am I off mark?
I'm thinking that isn't the whole story. Is there a reason this would be
less desirable than any other way (i.e. generic)? Does it use more
resources which would make the generic kernel run better on less powerful
systems?

TIA

Ed
