Default Kubuntu 7.04, SB Audigy -- and no sound

two problems here...

first:
Ok, I got the KDE Help going will enough to find some help on the SB
sound problem...

Following the help page directions, I went to
http://www.help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToConfigureSoundBlassterAudigySEinBreezy
(hope I typed that correctly)

I followed the directions on that page (doubting a little, since I'm
using Feisty Fawn)

Went to the Debian source and, although the file named in the ubuntu
site was not found, I did find the most recent .deb file.

I down loaded that, and followed the directions to install it.

installation of ca01206 for Audigy SE SB0570 seemed to go as intended.

I restarted sound, and got sound out of the two front speakers, but the
two remaining plugs are dead.

O.K., I can live with sound from two speakers...

Ooops, when I using various program, then exited, the sound died.
This was the better part of the day, so I don't know exactly when I lost
the sound.

When I try to restart sound

the restart runs, and runs, and runs, and...

click cancel
try restart, and it seems restart.

return to 'general' and select "test sound' - no sound.

I have also encountered this problem after putting the system into
hibernation. on restart, there is no sound.

If I turn the computer off, on power-up, the sound is restored.
(I turn it off every night.)

Second:
I wondered if there were another way to re-start the sound, such as from
a terminal cli, I went to the KDE Help to search for sound restart, or
restart sound, or...

When I attempt to use KDE Help, the only serch possible is Unix Manuals,,,
When I attempt to "build search index: "Application status is checked
but status is "missing"
click on 'build index results in error msg...

X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167
Major opcode: 144
Minor opcode: 3
Resource id: 0x0
Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167
Major opcode: 144
Minor opcode: 3

INDEXDIR: /home/glenn/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/
FINDCMD: find /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/ -name index.docbook
Creating index for 'kde_application_manuals'
htdig failed

opening a terminal, and Using mc, i can navigate the first indexidr, and
in /index/
I find /ked_app-als.tmp
and a file (or link) kde_app-ls.conf (or kde_application-manuals.conf)

in /kde_app-als.tmp is *docbookparser and
htd_mime
and
index.html -- which contains html links...

but the only search available is the Unix Manual...

What am I missing here?
Is there no search of the KDE Manual and Application manuals?

Where do I get what-ever-it-is to put into those sub-directories to
prevent the "htdig failed" err msg?

Thanks for your suggestions

I got a similar error and it looks like others are as well. This fix
worked for me and seems to work for others:

Short answer, No...

Long answer:
I went to the site, read the posts... copy/print the instructions.

I browsed the files to make sure I could identify what I was supposed to
change.

I did notice that the directions for for "input device 168"

Hwever, since most (if not all) of the posts at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2579079
had mentioned "input device 167 (like mine) it might be worth a try.

I also notice that the posts did not include the "htdig failed"

Still, I decided to follow the directions.

I made a backup file, then
sudo gedit xorg.conf

made double and tripple sure that I commented #out all the indicated
lines for "wacom"

I restarted x

I was encouraged when x came up.
However, when I went to KDE Help and again attempted to build the index,
the error is changed to
"INDEXDIR: /home/glenn/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/
FINDCMD: find /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/ -name index.docbook
Creating index for 'kde_application_manuals'
htdig failed

The Applications status still show as "missing"

When I try a search for "htdig failed" i get
"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

I noticed that as well, and my error was for input device 169.

That's what I saw, too, so I figured it must be related to yours.

Good, I'm so glad. (:

A Google search on htdig failed says this might be bug #19767. Take a look
and see what you think: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/19767

Maybe it's the quotation marks messing it up? Here's my search with about
47,400 hits:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=htdig+failed&btnG=Google+Search

The link I gave you above was the very first one from this search. You'll
want to look over some of the others - after all I'm very new to this, and
I don't want to steer you wrong. (:

Installed htdig, KDE Help now reports

Persistent connections : Yes
HEAD call before GET : Yes
Connections opened : 0
Connections closed : 0
Changes of server : 0
HTTP Requests : 0
HTTP KBytes requested : 0
HTTP Average request time : 0 secs
HTTP Average speed : 0 KBytes/secs
ht://dig End Time: Sun May 6 19:55:41 2007
Finished successfully.

Which leaves me to comment on how darn fast you are... at something I'm
just learning :-)

Thanks...

It ALSO leaves me to wonder why the search of Kubuntu Forum did not
score any hits on "htdig failure" (sans the quotes, of course :-)

First on the list in google, NOT on the list at kubuntu....
I'm shaking my head...

thanks for the lesson...
.... on to the next...

No problem - I'm learning, too. We can learn together. (:

That page was part of Launchpad, where bugs are reported and sorted out.
With the number of people who responded to that, I'm kind of surprised it
didn't make it into the forums.

Whatever gets the job done, right?

Heh, I know the feeling. Learn, learn and learn some more. (:
