"Root logins are not allowed"

Hmmmm...I've been using Linux in different flavors for about 5 years, and
haven't been denied login as root before!

How do we get around this?!?!

Hi,

In the best traditions of open source "borrowing" of other people's
knowledge:

Enabling graphical root login

<!> It is highly recommended NOT to allow root to login graphically!

In Gnome

*

Open System --> Administration --> Login Screen Setup

*

Click on the security tab

*

Check Allow root login

BigH:

AFAIK this is a very weird point with Ubuntu. It uses a "behavioral" lock
rather than a syntactic(?) lock to protect usrland from itself.

Could be a good idea. So the issue
becomes not WHO ( == root in std *nix ) has access to fundamental system
functions, but HOW ( you must enter 1st usrland password every time !! )
those fundamentals are accessed.

Hurts my usrland brain just thinking about this. My advise is ... smile
and pay the byteboyz this one "dues"... an opportunity-cost! Then return
to your spherical Bessel functions, complex wave impedance or whatever
earns you a living on the computer.

Follow up:

It changed the root password, so now I am able to run as root. A lot of
utilities that ask for root password work now!

Out of interest - which ones? I had a few problems with Warty (the
first Ubuntu release) and KDE with some KControl modules not working at
all, but it was largely fixed in Hoary and totally fixed in Breezy.
Under Dapper, the memories of modules not working due to the lack of a
"real" root account are just a fuzzy memory Everything I've used in
both Gnome and KDE just works without a real root account - they have
done a great job of substituting the sudo model into the GUI.

Not trolling - genuinely curious. Ubuntu (especially Dapper) should
have everything working using the "rootless" sudo authentication.

On a side note, I've been a full-time Unix administrator and systems
programmer for over 10 years and since using Ubuntu with no root
account, it hasn't bothered me. In fact, I like the idea of no root
account for desktop/small-server purposes.

Cheers,

James

Type at the prompt:

sudo passwd

You are asked for your own password. Type it.

Then you are asked for a new password for »root«, type and retype it..

Is this the answer of your question?

Regards.
