Default Real Player in Ubuntu

Aging newbie here. I have two problems involving audio in
Ubuntu. Perhaps someone has solutions.

1. BBC Radio has standardized on Real Player to play its
streaming audio. I've downloaded RealPlayer and followed the
installation instructions, but the BBC -- via Firefox -- doesn't
appear to see the Real Player program. Result: no audio. (Real
Player installed in my home directory, and put up a message that
it was installing a Mozilla plugin during the download. RP does
work for audio playback, since I can play existing MP3 files by
starting RealPlayer manually. Possibly a PATH problem?)

2. In XP, I use a program called Total Recorder to convert
the audio stream to an MP3 file, which I can then play on my
computer or in an MP3 player. Is there anything similar in Linux?

Do you know where you installed realplayer to ?
Mine is in /usr/local/real

so to make it work in firefox from a terminal cd to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

then sudo ln -s /usr/local/real/mozilla/nphelix.so
and sudo ln -s /usr/local/real/mozilla/nphelix.xpt

Replace /usr/local/real with wherever you installed it to.

Restart firefox and put aboutlugins into the address bar to make sure it
has worked.

On 2007-06-21, Ronald Hands <rNOSPAMhands@mountaincable.net> rambled on thusly:

In Firefox, do:

aboutlugins

Check to see if RealPlayer is listed there. If it isn't, then the
RealPlayer plugin isn't actually installed, and you can focus on that bit.
