Default So I was gutsy today...

And upgraded to Gutsy!

Aside from an issue with the nVidia driver not wanting to install right away
under the new kernel because for some really odd and weird reason having
dosemu installed in the past conflicts with the tmp dir the installer uses
during installation!?

I don't even see a relation between the two *but* apparently I am not the
only one who has had the problem as google brought up hits to the problem,
but nothing significant as to solutions.

Passing the installer a different tmp dir via the --tmpdir= parameter fixed
things though. It still whined when removing the old driver but the install
of the new driver went smoothly then.

Had to go the replace feisty/gutsy and dist-upgrade route though.

update-manager -c -d still refuses to work and I didn't want to wait any
longer.

Have to say, so far up and running pretty smoothly.

And looks like they actually fixed a bug that was bugging me with Japanese
input in a terminal which would randomly cause the terminal window to
crash. It hasn't crashed on me yet since the upgrade and normally would
have already by now.

So yea, I'm pretty happy!

One odd thing though, and this applies to both feisty and gutsy, the
restricted driver manager absolutely refuses to work with my 8800 GTX. I
have to install the driver manually from command line.

Nothing that bothers me but...I don't know if it's an issue with the driver
manager or just an issue with my system. Only way to rule out my system
would be to do a clean install and see if it works then and I'm not really
in the mood to try that.

I went to the Ubuntu site but could not find where I can download this.
Is there an ISO available?

Fair enough, but why isn't there a link on the Ubuntu site to download it?

I downloaded and burned the ISO. When I put it in my PC to install, it
stuck on "Loading Linux Kernel 3%". I tried to check the CD for
integrity, but the same thing happened. I let it sit at that point for
10 minutes or so, but no change on the progress... any ideas?

That I honestly don't know, I didn't use the ISO CD. I upgraded my existing
Feisty installation. You may want to try going that route yourself.

"JT" illuminated the devil's arse by typing:

You may well have answered your own question. CD integrity.

I suggest doing a hash check prior to burning.

How much memory do you have. I believe you require at least 256mb to
install Gutsy (just a rumour I'd heard). If you have less, you'll need
the alternative install CD.

Is your Hard disk connected via PATA or SATA? There are potential
issues with SATA hardware recogninition.

Just chucking a few things into the hat.

"Stephan Rose" illuminated the devil's arse by typing:

I have done it on two PC's. The NVidia drivers upgraded
successfully on both.

Just one question, did you use Alberto's Envy script to originally
install your NVidia drivers?

The only major issue I have had in the 4 weeks of running it was a
breakage of VMWare Server. This is simply due to a kernel update and no
matching VMWare headers. VirtualBox runs just fine though, so it's not
too much of an issue.

Nope I simply used the nVidia installer right of their website, nothing
else.

Weird part is though that my previous video card, 7800 GT, worked perfectly
fine with the restricted driver manager.

Then when I switched to the 8800 GTX, it stopped working.

So either it's an issue of the restricted driver manager not working with my
8800GTX correctly or it's something totally different that has crept into
system causing the driver manager to not work correctly and I just didn't
notice it until upgrading my video card.

I actually just ran into another small problem which wasn't too hard to fix.

I have two separate X Screens running, one at 1600x1200 on my primary
monitor and one at 1024x768 for my plasma TV. The resolutions are correct
however for the GUI layout, the second screen apparently uses the
resolution of the primary screen. Needless to say, 1600x1200 doesn't fit
very well on a 1024x768 screen.

I noticed this when I saw the bottom panel bar missing and when MythTV sized
itself to 1600x1200 instead of 1024x768 when I went to watch a DVD.

My workaround has been to temporarily set my primary screen to the TV's
resolution and things are fine then.
