Click on view/threads/expand all threads, or simply hit the asterisk key.

Ask the person who ties your shoelaces for you in the mornings. They
probably can tell you while they're spoonfeeding your applesauce to you.

That top post is puzzling.

- Tbird's default is bottom cursor positioning
- Tbird's reply cursor position is configurable

In order for you to top post using Tbird, either you would have had to
move your cursor from the bottom where it was placed by the default
configuration -- or else you would have had to modify the default
configuration, which seems unlikely given your unfamiliarity with
configuration changes, and changed the configuration to start your reply
above the quote.

Puzzling.

So is the grayed out remark. I cannot yet imagine a configuration by
which the expand thread function would be grayed out.

You don't. You move the cursor to the proper place. You don't want
the cursor at the bottom; you want it where you can review the
post, remove what you are not responding to, and add comments after
that which you are.

As someone is fond of pointing out in some groups: "You don't shit
in your pants because that's where your arsehole it."
