Default turning off eth0

I've got an "always on" router/modem for DSL. I'm seriously uncomfortable
with the network always up. What's the best way to disable/enable eth0?

Ideally, there would be a screen widget that could start/stop eth0 with
a "push button".....

No doubt there is David but that would be a component of the desktop if
you're using one. The CLI push-button is:

sudo ifconfig eth0 down

and conversely, sudo eth0 up

both assuming you're not running as root.

In a terminal window:

user@localhost:~$ sudo ifconfig eth0 down

To bring it back up:

user@localhost:~$ sudo ifconfig eth0 up

There is. In System/Administration you'll see something called "Networking"
Click on this it'll ask you for your Admin Password then pop up a window
in which you can enable/disable your net devices. I moved mine to the
desktop for ease of use.

Or you could simply install a firewall, firestarter.

If you're using Gnome you might want to look at:

NetworkManager Applet 0.6.3

aka, the gnome-netstatus-applet package available via Synaptic. When
stuck on a panel a right-click pops a menu that will let you enable
disable your connection(s) (wired or wireless).

This is a nice convenient way to go. You can deny all inbound connection
attempts to your machine and still be able to browse out when you want. I
would reccommend this over a manual toggle switch.
