Default Why no Mplayer?

I've looked in every repository I could find, but none have mplayer.
That seems so odd because mplayer is a very popular app. Does anyone
know why, and does anyone know how to get mplayer running on Kubuntu?

Thanks!

Strange! I was messing about with Ubuntu on my old laptop yesterday and
install mplayer! I seem to recall that was after I'd installed some
codecs and stuff with easy ubuntu and I let it setup the repos for me.

I ran easyubuntu and it setup a bunch of codecs, but no mplayer. I
didn't select for it to setup repos for me though. I will try that.

I can't remember the exact terminology that Easy Ubuntu used but it was
one of the check boxes. I also did not use the Add/Remove software tool
if that makes a difference, I always use Synaptic Package Manager.

I tried letting Easyubuntu add repositories and that didn't help. I'm
using Adept, not Synaptic, but I don't see how that could be the issue.
Just to be sure, you've got Mplayer installed, not Kmplayer, right?

You both will benefit using Google. Here are instructions - the full URL is

I've definitely tried searching Google and GoogleGroups on this, repeatedly.
The problem turned out to be that I had my repositories messed up. I
thought I had multiverse when in reality I just had multiverse for
security updates, or something like that. Easyubuntu didn't seem to
set them right either.

Thanks for everyone's help.
