Default wifi driver question

I recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a Compaq Persario 5100 series machine
with built in wireless. Out of the box, Ubuntu doesn't see the wifi
device. Using ifconfig I see eth0, eth1 and lo. I contacted Compaq for the
driver hoping to use wrapper to install. They sent me ax .exe file.

How do I execute this to get the driver?

builtin wireless must mean that it is a laptop, which you didn't
mention.

Nor did you give its real model number. Compaq's Presario 5100 absent
any other model letters in front of the 5100 part is a desktop.

Here are 191 model numbers of desktops and laptops which Compaq
considers to be 'Presario 5100' series

.... pick out yours.

Persario = Presario

5015 = 5105

I'm going to presume that we are talking about a Presario which is not a
5015 because we are talking 5100 series but presumably a V5105US which
does show in the compaq 191 models linked previously. It is very
important when you are searching for things to not reverse their letters
or numbers, or else you won't find anything.

Compaq's page about the V5105US hardware is not as helpful as some other
compaq pages I've looked at for desktop mobos and other hardware - but
I'm seeing some clues that the V5105US harbors a Broadcom chipset for
which there is some information in the hardware support
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsBroadcom

.... and in this discussion in the ub forums
http://82.211.81.186/showpost.php?s=f78d3a80425a5b9cb78c4456530294bb&p=1304848&postcount=234
Compaq V5105 - Hey this is just an FYI of what worked for me!

He used the kubuntu network manager, which sounds like a more useful
tool than Gnome's and ndiswrapper.

Thanks Mike. Sorry for the bad typing. I think what you suggest will do
the trick.
