Default xorg.config again

I have managed to get rid of the xorg.config.swp file in X11 and now have a
read only xorg.config file. However when I use a terminal to access the file
I get the message "/etc/X11/xorg.config" [New File] at the bottom of the
terminal window.

I have located the information needed to paste into xorg.config in order to
get my screens proper res of 1440x900 but was wondering if I will have to
create a new xorg.config file since the one in X11 is read only and if so
what is the right way..

On Monday 12 February 2007 06:57 pm, Colyn ranted on thusly:

A couple of things:

1) You want to be working on xorg.conf, not xorg.config.

2) It should be read-only; it is a system file. You can edit it using sudo:
from a terminal, try:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

But I strongly, strongly recommend that you first do:

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/

That will create a backup copy of xorg.conf in your home directory. It is
very common to destroy an xorg.conf the first few times that you try to
edit it. Having a backup copy of the original is strongly recommended.

Colyn was all like, you know, and then said something like a ...

It's /etc/X11/xorg.conf <--- not "config".

I got it right now...

I not only backed it up I backed it up to my external removable drive also.

I did finally get my screen res right. I also saved it to my backup in case I
need it again.

I don't know why I kept typing it wrong. I'd look at it and still do it
wrong. Maybe I was just tired but I finally got it right..

You do know about TAB completetion right? you could likely have done:
vi /e<TAB>X<TAB>xo<TAB>

which would have translated to:

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and got there.

I didn't know about that. I'll have to remember it in case.
Thanks
