Default Bunny ears straight to receiver? (receiver)

Is there a way to connect a bunny ears TV antenna directly to a
somewhat newish Sony receiver? Is there a small box or device (other
than bulky VCR) that will convert the over-the-air signal into
something the receiver can understand?

If you mean an AV receiver, those don't have built in tuners, so you need
an external tuner. For DTV, you can use one of the new coupon elegible
boxes.

Default Bunny ears straight to receiver? (tv)

Any antenna, including "bunny ears", just picks up the tv signal and
delivers it to the set. Possible problems:
1. The antenna has a twin-lead 300 ohm cable, and the tv has a coaxial jack:
Buy a matching transformer with a coaxial plug, and wire the twin-lead to
it.

2. The antenna has separate VHF and UHF leads:
Buy a signal combiner with a single output plug.

3. You are concerned with the digital changeover next February:
Buy a converter set top box. Connect the antenna to the input jack on the
box. Connect a cable from the output of the box to the tv.

I have purchased one of those digital TV conversion boxes (Zenith). It
outputs to three RCA jacks (white, red and yellow).

If I plug the RCA jacks directly into the TV set, it works.

However, when I plug them into the corresponding inputs (Video 2) on
my Sony A/V receiver -- I get nothing.

Is an AV receiver unable to interpret the analog video signal coming
out of the digital TV conversion box?

Are you selecting the input correctly?

Yes. In fact, to test it, I plugged it into the input taken by a game
console that's working.

Are AV receivers able to process analog video signals?

Of course. Most signals are analog, like vcr's.

Yes, it will pass it through if everything is hooked up right and you select
the correct source on the receiver. The receiver will likely not convert the
composite signal to S-Video or component, if one of those are the monitor out
connection you are using from the receiver to the TV.

Make sure all the connections are correct and the composite video monitor out
from the receiver is hooked up to the TV. Then, select video 2 as the source
on the receiver.

Your statement, "The receiver will likely not convert the composite
signal to S-Video or component, if one of those are the monitor out
connection you are using from the receiver to the TV" could very well
be the issue.

The receiver is connected to the TV from the receiver via a component
setup. The TV signal from the converter box is a composite signal. I
do get the TV audio on the receiver, but no video.

Are newer receivers able to convert composite signals to component
signals, or is that a limitation of even current model receivers?

Just found this on Sony's site:
1. If a composite video device is connected to a line input on the
receiver, the S-Video and composite video output will not contain a
video signal.

2. If an S-Video device is connected to a line input on the receiver,
the composite video output will not contain a video signal.

3. If a composite or S-video signal from a VCR is converted and output
to the TV as a component signal, the picture may not display due to
copyright protection encoded in the video signal.

Looks like #3 is the snag. Anyone know if this is common with all
brands of receivers, or is this an issue specific to Sony receivers?
