Default ****ogue or digital camcorder?

Have been using a Canon Hi-8 ****ogue camcorder with a Matrox G450eTV
capture card for some time now with good results.
The Canon was damaged and I can't get it fixed so I will be buying a new
camcorder.
Question is whether to stick with the Hi-8 ****ogue format or to go digital.
If I do go digital is my capture card redundant?
Will I need to add a Firewire card, I see that some camcorders now have a
USB connection?
Some camcorders can record in MPEG4 (AVI) format, is it worth going for this
type?
I have a number of Hi-8 tapes, can I use them in a digital camcorder?
Any comments on the pros and cons of either format welcome.

Pretty much so, although you could still capture from the video out but rather
pointless if you have a digital camera.

I haven't seen the USB camera's but it was only a matter of time, these would
need to be USB-2 type of course, generally I've found firewire to work
extremely well... and I know the current software definitely caters for
firewire, I use the firewire on my Audigy sound card, although many motherboards
also have firewire these days as does my current Asus K8VSEDX board.

As you probably know Sony are the only manufacturer to make a camera which can
also read back Hi8 tapes, and from what I've read I believe most of their recent
Digital8 range can no longer handle Hi8 tapes.
I transferred all my old Hi8 tapes onto my DVD-R quite a while ago before
passing the camera on to a family member.

Editing and copying without loss is a good enough reason to go digital and the
prices are now probab;y cheaper than many Hi8's, but I do understand the
implications of having hi8 tapes left especially if there's quite a few of
them.
Go digital... you'll soon appreciate the smaller size too. :-))

Thanks for the reply, have since discovered that USB on newer camcorders is
mainly for transferring stills rather than video.
Will have a look around to see what's available in Digital 8 which will also
read my old Hi-8 tapes, I have some stuff I wouldn't like to lose.
