Default Channel numbers after the transition

Will DTV stations still be allowed to identify themselves with their old
****og channel numbers, even though they've moved to a different digital
channel?

For example, my local channel 4 is moving to channel 32. Their current DTV
signal on channel 32 maps itself as "4" in DTV receivers. Will they be
able to continue calling themselves "channel 4", and mapping their channel
number as 4, even after they've long left channel 4?

On a web forum, I was told that they will. This doesn't make a bit of
sense to me.

Yes, for at least a few years they will still be using their old ****og
channel numbers (a lot of investment into getting the public to know
those numbers).

I have noticed that a few stations (mostly PBS stations) have done away
with calling themselves by their channel numbers and only go by the last
three letters of their call sign.

Here in the Kansas City area,
FOX WDAF TV 4 DT 34 now uses <www.myfoxkc.com>
CBS KCTV TV 5 DT 24 still uses <www.kctv5.com>
ABC KMBC TV 9 DT 7 now uses just <www.kmbc.com>

It looks to me like the local broadcasters are
deemphasizing their OTA ****og channel number and
emphasizing their Network affiliation/call letters.

Default Channel numbers after the transition (receiver)

Yes, but they still need to pick something to identify themselves by number,
I think.

For example, my receiver displays a channel number which it pulls from the
PSIP information, if present. The receiver's channel memory follows these
numbers. For Los Angeles, in order: KCBS ****og = Ch 2 (DT = 60); KNBC
****og = Ch 4 (DT = 35); KTLA ****og = Ch 5 (DT = 31), etc.

See, the receiver ignores the true RF assignment and uses the virtual
channel number in the PSIP -- 2, 4, 5, etc. That's typical behavior, isn't
it???

It gets complicated. KCBS is co-owned with KCAL, ****og, 9, DT 43.
KCBS-DT is going to move to 43 coincident with KCAL-DT moving to 9. It
sounds whacked except that KCBS can't stay on 60 after transition and
presumably doesn't want 2 for DT.

KSMO TV 62 is on ****og cable channel 10 on both Comcast and
Time Warner cable around here, consequently, KSMO uses the
ID "Channel 62 Cable Channel 10".

Maybe, considering ****og and digital cable TV, digital
satellite TV and telco digital TV, the local broadcasters
will ID themselves with a list of channel numbers (for each
distribution method) rather than just their (old and likely
unused) ****og channel.

Maybe . . . Maybe not. The NBC affiliate in Charlotte, NC is on channel 36,
but the local cable systems carry it on channel 6. The station identifies
itself as NBC 6. There are also three stations in the Fort Myers, FL area
that do the same thing.

http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-07-138A1.pdf has a
list of post transition OTA channel assignments as of last August. Here in
the DC area, ABC and CBS plan to return to their old VHF channels, 7 and 9.
