Default DTV reception debate (tv)

<http://broadcastengineering.com/ar/broadcasting_dtv_reception_debate/index.htm>

"If broadcasters are 'guilty' of anything in the DTV transition,
it is not paying attention to PSIP and MPEG encoding issues. A
broadcaster who does not implement even static PSIP correctly is
shooting his or her digital channel in the foot."

Default DTV reception debate

htm>

I believe Dave Arland's response to this LONG letter summed it up quite
eloquently ...

"Still — the biggest issue in this transition has NOTHING to do with
broadcasting. It’s cable. The average consumer will expect HDTV to work
with cable."

Once OpenCable VSB/QAM boxes/tuners are available HDTV will take off.

Default DTV reception debate

Well, it appears that two of my local stations problem are due to the
studio transmitter link, and overloads on the NTSC side seem to cause
dropouts in the digital transmission. Initially, it appears that it
is some kind of wierd syntax error in the MPEG encoding, but one
station had narrowed the problems down to an STL problem.

Default DTV reception debate (receiver samsung)

For weeks, I tried to get our local ABC affiliate to fix a no-audio
problem, specific only to my particular 8VSB STB (Samsung TS160). The
station flatly refused to admit anything was wrong and insisted it was
my receiver at fault.

After getting complaints from several viewers, the station and Harris
finally traced the problem to incorrect PSIP data from a "PSIP software
update" recently done by Harris.

There is a large stack of returned TS160s in the "open-box special" bin
at my local BestBuy that may have been returned because of this SNAFU.
Samsung tech support says such problems are widespread.

With problems like this, plus low power/low stick DTV transmitters,
it's no wonder that electronics dealers are not pushing DTV STB sales.
