Well, My old SONY has finally bit the bullet (it was one of the models
that had a 'bad fuse' on the board. Managed to apply the 'fix'
advertised on a web site and got a couple more years out of it). In
looking to replace the DVD player, I find that most DVD players seems
to have only digital output for 5.1 audio. My home theater receiver
only has ****og 5.1 inputs.

Anyone out there know if a DVD player (recorder even?) is made that
still has ****og 5.1 outputs?

Lots of players still have DD/DTS decoders, and hence 5.1 ****og outputs.
Currently my favorite budget player is the Pioneer DV-588A which also adds
DVD-A/SACD, and DivX playback for around $140US or less..

Yeow! I'd heard the DV-578A was discontinued, but saw no mention of its
successor. I have a codefree 578 and it's a bargain for its versatility
and decent playback performance. Much better than the cheap
Chinese-designed do-it-all players that are flooding the low-end market
these days. Now they've added DivX ... geez, how can I explain purchasing
ANOTHER player to the wife? :-)

Not sure if you're asking model number of DVD or Receiver

DVD - DVP-560D - has been a good DVD player but had a design flaw
involving a fuse that I 'fixed' in a last ditch effort - lasted for
another 2 years after the 'fix' but now get errors and trouble
focusing on almost all DVDs. Has lasted a pretty long time (5-6
years, I think)

Receiver - STR-SE391 - also has given good service. NO DIGITAL AUDIO
INPUTS. Not ready to spring for another receiver for this room with a
(possible) upstairs home theater on the drawing board. Thanks, Bennie

Great lead on the DV-578A - looks just right for the job. Would like
to have a recorder also, but not absolutely necessary. Have already
found a couple of online sites that still stock it (so they say). Thanks, Bennie

Just so you know, pretty much EVERY universal player has DD/DTS encoding
built-in and therefore has the requisite 5.1 ****og outputs. There are
quite a few budget models (IMO less than $200), from many makers, but I
think the Pioneer is one of the better ones in the price range.

Interesting... maybe it's not obvious from the intenet 'stores' specs,
but I see the following online:
audio out
--------------
2 RCA L/R
Digital 5.1 (optical and sometimes, COAX)

but none have said specificially they have 5.1 ****og RCA outputs. I
have found that the local BestBuy has a few models with the 5.1 ****og outputs. Thanks

All universal players have 5.1 ****og outputs, they have to to be able to
play DVD-A/SACD titles...
