KFI
I think KNX studied this, since their site in Torrance is farther from the
center of the metro area. They especially wanted a better signal in the inland
empire. But a directional signal east would not reach San Diego (nation's
seventh-largest city) or parts of the state north and west of LA.
KBIG does a good job from their site on Catalina, but I don't know how, since
it's a rock, and their stick is on a mountaintop there. But they only operate
during daylight, and probably don't reach the inland empire very well.
KFI's site is perfect for the greater LA area. KNBR does OK with a Franklin
antenna at about 450 feet, I think. They'd do better with a half-wave though,
but it's an airport issue there too.
I'm surprised KFI is having the problem. If the FAA decided that the 750 feet
stick presented a safety hazard, why didn't they try to get the station to take
it down (or did they?). Since the station already had the tower (which I think
predated the airport), their lawyers would seem to have a good argument that
they can rebuild it.
