Default Surround sound on OTA network

I have noticed that when I am watching the news and I switch from
satellite to OTA digital (but not HD) network stations, my sound
changes. On Directv the sound will be coming from the center channel,
but when I switch to OTA digital (not HD) the sound comes from the front
left/right and not the center.

I imagine you just need to hit a button on your stereo to switch it into
Dolby Pro Logic II mode.

It is in Dolby, but there seems to be no sound from the center channel.

Default Surround sound on OTA network (receiver)

Here in GBay, WI, the CBS-HD OTA channel attempts to pass

Dolby Digital 5.1 most all the time.... However when the

digital CBS program is in DD 2.0 or Pro Logic.....

the DD 2.0 on CBS local is transformed in DD 5.1 with only

the Left & right channel having audio... Really it's just 2

channel stereo except that the Onkyo receiver says DD EX...

for this 2 channel effect... Generally DD 5.1 is superb...

Can you tell from your receiver if the program being broadcast is Dolby 2.0
or Dolby 5.1? If it's Dolby 2.0 then there should be a mode "Dolby Digital
+ Pro Logic II" in order to get it to broadcast out the center speaker.
However, if your OTA broadcaster is doing the same thing that Dennis
described (i.e. converting DD 2.0 into a DD 5.1 broadcast) then it's not a
very easy thing to change. An alternate solution would be to hook a pair of
cheap RCA stereo cables from your STB to your receiver. In order to
properly use the center channel, etc. you need to have a stereo signal
presented to your receiver. If they're converting the signal to 5.1 then
the only way to give it a stereo signal is with RCA cables.
