Default What is the dif between mp1, mp2, mp3, mp4? (tv)

I just need a simple explanation. Are they different types of
compression? Is mp4 the best compression for quality out there? My
goal is to make 6 hour DVD from tv and home video with good/great
quality. Or come closer to it. I have win DVD creator platinum.
Also what is the best prog for mp4 if that is the best compression
type.

You wont be coding to mp4 and playing it on anything but the pc...

First of all it is mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg3, and mpeg4 (it is an acronym for
Motion Picture Expert Group)

Mpeg1 is the worse. It allows lower bitrates and resolutions than mpeg2.
Mpeg2 basically allows higher resolution and bitrates but essentially uses
the same algorithm that mpeg1 does. Mpeg3 was basically mpeg2 with a few
added extensions for features like High definition tv. Mpeg2 could do
everything that mpeg3 was planned to do so it was basically scrapped and
never adopted. Mpeg4 uses an entirely new algorithm. Mpeg4 is better
suited for lower bitrates than mpeg2 in order to display the same image at
the same resolution, resulting in a net smaller video for approximately the
same quality.

Some dvd players will play them. Microsoft is pushing their crap (as in
license) codec WMV, more and more DVD players will be able to play them.
Mine plays divx and xvid movies. I also read an article several weeks ago
about mp4 as a standard on the next gen dvd players. I'm not sure if it was
high definition or blue tooth, but one of them approved it as a standard.

Yes. Lots of info available on many web sites.

MP3 is not a video format, however. It is actually shorthand for
MPEG1 Layer 3, which is an audio compression scheme. As MP2 is layer
2 - but I know you mean MPEG2, right?

Much depends on your source material. TV capture can be done in DV
format, yet another. These files are quite large and will typically
be converted to one of the formats you've ask about. A playable DVD
would then be made from the transcoded data.

Although writable DVD9 has hit the market (softly) it will still be a
while for that media to be economically feasible. So, I'll assume
that you want to get 6 hours onto a DVD5. That's stretching MPEG2
well to the max and you may be very unhappy with the result.

There are so many choices you're just going to have to do some
reading. This is a painful, but informative site:
http://www.videohelp.com/

You're lucky to be starting now, newer hardware (stand-alone players,
PVR DVDs, capture cards) will make the task easier than only two years
ago. However, there is so much to choose from the that task is not so
simple.

MPEG2 can be created on-the-fly in several "hardware" devices. MPEG4
is just getting to this stage tho it is still better (more compressed)
when produced in two or more passes of the material.

New stand-alone-players (be sure to visit "DVD Players" at the URL
provided) will handle all of the formats you might consider. With
these players "authoring" becomes optional. 6 playtime hours becomes
a trivial task using the MPEG4 coding scheme, but there are other
considerations when choosing this method. Today, you'll still be
transcoding from some other format to get MPEG4 and that's a time
consuming process. It's time consuming too to transcode to MPEG2, but
the hardware real-time captures are quite good, if that's the end
product that you want.

Software is another issue. MPEG4 software is often free, MPEG2
software is usually fee-based - tho for the most part reasonably
priced. Regardless, conversion requires some familiarity with the
tools, and choosing among tools really requires some experimentation,
as we each have our likes and dislikes with what we've grown
accustomed to over time.

So mapping out the hardware/software to reach your goal should entail:

Display device - TV, progressive, projection, HD, etc?
Player device: formats handled (MPEG2/4, MPEGISO/AVI, DVD, etc.)
Conversion software if necessary: processing time, latitude (how
compressed vs. quality)
Capture device - real-time conversion from ****og to ???? (DV, MPEG2,
MPEG4) max frame size, max bit-rate, a/v synch problems.
Source material - cable or satellite capture, (S)VCR capture, Laser
disc capture, digital cam capture.

I think you know what you want to see. Your goal may or may not be
realistic. But you'll know after filling in the blanks.

HTH,
BJ

Actually, it's "Moving Picture Experts Group". ;-)

And to Vile, go here to learn all you want (and much more) regarding MPEG
files: http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/
