Default Ragtime piano?

Anyone else sick of this shitty sound that Jordan constantly uses?!?!

It's "to the doubtful I DEMAND" and "not under your COMMAND", FYI.

Ragtime is just a piano, or and old sounding piano, he only uses it in
TDoE and regular piano everywhere else so I'm not sure what you mean.

Frankly, I'm sick of ALL of Jordan's cheesy sounds. His patches are
especially out of place on the new album because it's so heavy. The band is
rocking along, and then all of a sudden Jordan takes a solo and it sounds
like the soundtrack to the Legend of Zelda. If they want to be a heavy band,
they should lose him and go looking for a second guitar player.

IMO, Jordan is the weak link in DT and they would do well to replace him
with someone with the stylings of Moore or Sherinian, both of whom seemed to
suit the band far better. For my money, he is responsible for most of the
low points in songs off SFAM, 6DOIT and TOT. His inappropriate (sometimes
terrible) patch selections, his bizarre improvisations on melody and his
overplaying really grate on me at times.

Don't get me wrong - I don't think he's a bad keyboard player... far from
it. Clearly the man has more chops than a lumberjack, but I think it's just
a case of "too many virtuosos spoil the band". With Petrucci and Rudess both
playing a-million-miles-a-minute scales on instruments that occupy a similar
"space" in the composition - as opposed to say, drums versus guitar - the
music can often sound too "dense", which mars the performance of both
players.

IMO, Jordan would do far better in a separate band with a less-able
guitarist, which would give him the much-needed "musical space" for his
playing.

Erik, Jordan uses a tiny bit of it in one of the songs on the new
release (I haven't memorized them yet; I'm only listening to it now for
the second time through), so that's where this guy's post came from. It
fits the song, though.

I won't spoil it for you (you can read spoilers in other posts if you're
at all curious), but it's definitely a heavy album, and not quite like
any Dream Theater you've heard before. I hope you like it, and I'm
curious to hear your review once it hits the stores on Tuesday. You
should hopefully still have my private e-mail address, so let me know
what you think.

Damn cut and paste! lol

He's used it more than once, and it's on the new CD and it's VERY out of
place IMO.

I think you hit the nail right on the head! I've been a little leery
about the new DT album and Rudess is the reason.
The whole point of a keyboard player is to compliment the sound and
not suddenly make it his solo record. Kevin Moore is a far more
laidback keyboardist and his excellent work on OSI's heavier songs
just confirms the fact he should rejoin Dream Theater, but I'm sure
it'll never happen.

Jordan's sounds are getting stale. They all SOUND THE SAME...on every album.
There is so much he could do and he chooses so many cheezey sounds.

Ragtime is not "just a piano". It's isn't necessarily piano, although the
most famous ragtime pieces are on piano. It's a style of playing that
involves heavy use of syncopation. The most famous ragtime pieces are Scott
Joplin's "Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag".
