Default Thoughts on Train of Thought

I haven't mentioned many details, but I'll put spoiler space anyway.

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

Well, I've listened to the album twice so far, and I have to say I'm a
little disappointed. It's got many awesome rocking moments, and is
definitely different from previous DT albums, but aside from Vacant (3
minutes), pretty much the whole album is extremely heavy. Lots of heavy
parts would be one thing, but on TOT the all-out assault seems to rarely
let up to give you a breather. And with the bass so thick and high in the
mix, even the more melodic parts still sound really heavy.

Anyway, so far, Vacant is probably my favourite track, even moreso than
Stream of Consciousness. The cello is just an awesome touch. But I hope
the rest of it grows on me (which it probably will).

It leaked all over the Internet today. I got it on DC++ (Ultimatemetal hub).
I'm sure Torrents have already popped up as well, but I don't know where.

BTW... Honor The Father is awesome! Very different for DT, but I like it.

BTW, I think reaction to this album is going to be VERY polarized. I think
a lot of prog fans might dislike it. Metal fans will probably love it. I
think most fans will end up respecting it for being a good album though,
even if it isn't their particular cup of tea.

It's definitely a radical departure from anything DT (or any other band)
has ever done, yet still unmistakably DT. It will probably take me a
couple more weeks to fully digest it and determine whether I get bored with
the songs or not. It should attract a lot of new fans though, that's for
sure.

It definitely doesn't top I&W or Awake for me, I can tell that right away.
But so far it seems like I'll probably end up liking it better than SDOIT
and FII largely on the basis of some very good tracks. "Honor Thy Father",
"Vacant", and "In The Name of God" work much better for me so far than
anything on SDOIT did. Surprisingly, I find the instrumental, "Stream of
Consciousness", rather boring after a few listens. I think I might like
the Rael Matthews and Dave Sanderson contest entry better than the real
thing. It's interesting to do the comparison though.

I was afraid of DT becoming more metal. The world already has thousands of
heavy bands. I will probably miss the great mix of prog and metal that DT used
to have.

Is the all-out assault on the senses sound anything like Rush's Vapor Trails?
That album is unlistenable IMO.

Yes, so far I feel like there is something missing on this album.

Unfortunately that's probably a pretty apt comparison. IMO, TOT sounds
like 69 minutes of "The Glass Prison", with a few softer parts like
"Vacant". But I will say one thing: the songs flow much better and are
much more polished than on SDOIT. You can really tell that they wrote and
refined everything before going into the studio.

Basically, the impression I have so far is that if you were to choose any
two of the six tracks on TOT (I'm not counting "Vacant" since it's so
short), they would be GREAT to have as PART of a DT album. These songs
could possibly be the highlights on an album - the Voices/Scarred,
Metropolis/LTL, Lines in the Sand/Trial of Tears, etc. But to have six of
those back to back, all sounding similar, just doesn't work for me. The
best thing about DT's best work for me has always been the variety, and
there just isn't much of that on TOT.

I expect that I'll hardly ever listen to this album in one sitting. They
just really overdid it with the "heavy" theme, which is what I was afraid
of. It does have one thing going for it though, which is that aside from
"As I Am", I haven't been able to pick a favourite or least favourite yet.
The songs are all pretty good -- as far as metal songs go anyway.

Another thing... to me the first five minutes of "Honor Thy Father" are
possibly the most catchy and radio friendly thing DT has ever done. Not
only that, but I like it (even the rapping and Nu-metal sounding parts).

I wouldn't be surprised if they release the first half up to where James
says "Don't cross the crooked step" at the 5 minute mark as a single. It's
a really easy radio edit since the rest of the song is just samples and
instrumental parts.

I'm actually a bit surprised they chose "As I Am" as the first single
instead of this one.
