I'd like to know what kind of music you listen to. Is Genesis your
definition of great prog music? Do you consider SDoIT a masterpiece?
I have no intention of criticizing or ridiculing. Just curious.

My favourite bands are Rush and The Flower Kings (DT was #1 until they
jumped the shark).

I didn't really like SDOIT. In my opinion, DT's latest two albums rank below
I&W, Awake, SFAM, and even FII. SDOIT and FII just seem so uninspired - like
they've lost their creativity. Melodically, they are just boring albums.

Rush, Queensryche, Genesis, Yes, Marillion, Kings-X. Melodic, great vocals,
great feeling.

Normally I catch the groove of 90%-100% of DT tracks per album. 6DOIT missed the

Actually, I prefer the fan club CD versions of the 6DOIT tracks. Raw, honest,
not over-processed, and missing a lot of Jordan's parts (which are way too
dominant and overbearing IMHO -- they stick out instead of blending in
harmoniously like Kevin and Derek's work)

It didn't feel like there was a real focus on 6DOIT. A lot of individual sparks
but not enough to ring the bell. It almost feels as if the two CDs are supposed
to make up for that in quantity.

Now wait... I don't dislike ToT since my order hasn't arrived yet (grr). The one
downloadable track didn't really click for me. But I wanted to throw out a comment on 6DOIT.

You mean to tell me you think TOT is boring and Godsmack, Helmet,
FILTER?, and Robert Palmer is exciting?

Sorry dude but these bands cant hold DT's strap!

Matthews, Incubus and Halen rock......Rush and Yes are true prog
pioneers....but c'mon Filter? Godsmack? better than DT? ouch

I totally disagree with your assessment about 6DOIT, particularly with
respect to disk 2.
It is full of melodically cool stuff... and dynamics, and timing, harmonics
and every other great thing you can measure music by.

Just because it has certain elements doesn't mean it's good. I will say
that SDOIT disc 2 is much, much better than TOT. But it is not near as
melodically interesting as Awake or I&W to me. There are no really strong
melodic themes. The parts that they chose to make sound really big and
symphonic weren't very memorable, which is why a lot of people have said
the Overture and Losing Time/Grand Finale sound "cheesy". On the other
hand, there are some really strong melodies in About To Crash and Solitary
Shell that could've been turned into themes for great epic songs - instead
DT chose not to emphasize those at all.

I definitely do have a new found respect for SDOIT disc 2 after listening
to the shit that is tracks 1-4, and 6 on Train of Thought, but it's pretty
clear to me that it was negatively affected by writing in the studio and
not having time to really polish the writing.
