I'm 5 songs through right now and honestly, I can't believe how bad this is.
It's heavy for the sake of being heavy. Not hooks, no melody...just a wall of
sound.

I am incredibly disappointed. When I heard that they were making a regular
album for the first time in 3 albums I figured it would totally kick ass.
These songs are all atrocious. As I am (album version) wasn't bad, but little
did I expect that it would be 10 times better than the next 4 songs I heard.

2 ****** down from me.

Hang on a minute. There is no way *anyone* could form an intelligent opinion
about this album yet--either pro or con. Give it a few days and a few
listens at least. I'm 1/2 way through my second listen, and some of it grabs
and some of it doesn't, but I'm not going to make a decision about it until
I get some sense of how the album hangs together and get familiar with the
lyrics and riffs. And just in case you think I'm some fanboy . . . trust me
.. . . if I end up thinking its crap, I'll be the very first to say so.

Unfortunately I have to agree. I gave it three listens already, I have a
HUGE headache, and I'm not even motivated to play it again.
There is no musical direction whatsoever in this album, there's barely
melody writing at all. It's all rythms and riffs, with Petrucci not
delivering a single melodic solo. All he does is playing chromatic keys up
and down as fast as a can. He's not Malms**** for heaven's sake !
And I won't even start again on the "undigested hence obvious" influence of
Metallica, Black Sabbath, Tool, etc...
The only good thing in the album (except for Vacant, which can hardly be
considered an independant track, given it's more of an introduction to
Stream of Consciousness) is the fact that you can hear John Myung's bass.
Apart from that, there are some nice bits and pieces, like in the beginning
of This Dying Soul or even half of Endless Sacrifice (were it not for this
unbearable chorus that's just like the one in Blind Faith and that I stopped
listening to a LONG time ago). JR's delirium in Stream of Cousciousness is
also nice, but that's all there is.
All the rest is plain physical performance, play hard, play fast. No soul.

Well, I'm almost trought listening to the entire album, and boy will I
be glad when i'm done ... there's no way you can differenciate between
songs, it's all just ... ... loud. And I already have a headache.

I believe many of you will like it - it still is a technicall
masterpiece. For me - it will end on the same R.I.P. shelf as
Metallica's St. Anger ...

So I'm not the only one. I listened a few times on my headphones and I also
got a headache. I thought it might have been a coincidence, but I rarely get
hedaches.

I don't know if it's the mixing, or just the assault of heaviness. I've never
liked Kevin Shirley's mixes with DT. He makes all the sounds loud and right
up front, which for me doesn't work at all. Sometimes there's stuff that
should be subtle and more in the background. On the other hand, other DT
stuff has never given me a headache. Much of SFAM is pretty heavy and
upfront, but I can listen to it all the way through with no problem. I've
also listened to heavy music before (when I was in my early ****s, I liked
Metallica and stuff like that) without getting a hedache.

Anyway, it looks like I'll only be listening to TOT one song at a time, at
best, at least until live versions of this material come out.

Sadly, I more or less have to agree with this. There are some really nice
melodic parts, but they're few and far between, and are usually just bass and
keyboards. Petrucci seems to have totally lost it on this album. He's fallen
in love with that 7th string and as if he can't play a note or chord without hitting it.

We are totally like-minded. I too could never stand the chorus in Blind
Faith, and Endless Sacrafice is horrible too. It has some nice parts, but the
chorus makes the song unlistenable.

So far the only tracks I seem to enjoy all the way through for the mostpart
are Honor Thy Father, Vacant, and In The Name of God. Perhaps Stream of
Consciousness will grow on me too, but I find it boring.

Very depressing indeed to see my once-favourite band lose it like this.
Fortunately I've discovered so much awesome music (like The Flower Kings, and
rediscovering Rush) in the past year that it doesn't bother me so much.

It's funny - that's EXACTLY what I was thinking as well. When I finished it I
was all set to play it again and I looked at the song list and thought to
myself "I have absolutely no desire to hear any of these songs right now."
Very disappointing for me b/c DT is probably my 2nd fave band and I was really
looking forward to having some new material to enjoy.
