20031107005725.10716.00000368@mb-m17.aol.com... is. wall of regular little heard. Unfortunately I have to agree. I gave it three listens already, I have a HUGE headache, and I'm not even motivated to play it again. There is no musical direction whatsoever in this album, there's barely melody writing at all. It's all rythms and riffs, with Petrucci not delivering a single melodic solo. All he does is playing chromatic keys up and down as fast as a can. He's not Malms**** for heaven's sake ! And I won't even start again on the "undigested hence obvious" influence of Metallica, Black Sabbath, Tool, etc... The only good thing in the album (except for Vacant, which can hardly be considered an independant track, given it's more of an introduction to Stream of Consciousness) is the fact that you can hear John Myung's bass. Apart from that, there are some nice bits and pieces, like in the beginning of This Dying Soul or even half of Endless Sacrifice (were it not for this unbearable chorus that's just like the one in Blind Faith and that I stopped listening to a LONG time ago). JR's delirium in Stream of Cousciousness is also nice, but that's all there is. All the rest is plain physical performance, play hard, play fast. No soul. Daniel |
