OK, I got laughed off the IMBB for suggesting this theory, but does any
one else think this song refers to the "face" on Mars?
It was pointed out that 'face in the sand' is an expression similar to
burying your head in the sand that does fit with the context of the
song, HOWEVER, the way it is worded in the song leaves some doubt, IMO.
The line in the song says "THE face". If it was referring to the
expression, shouldn't it read "OUR faces in the sand" or some thing like
that? Also, the reference to a "future memory" is rather odd, it's
almost an oxy-moron. If we hide our faces in the sand to shield us from
current events, won't that negate any future memories?
Here is my alternate interpretation of the lyrics:
The guy in the song is looking for SIGNS of the "end of times". He
speculates that the "face" on Mars is a sign, thus the line; Can the end
be at hand, is THE FACE in the sand, future memory of our tragedy?
So how is the face on Mars a future sign of our tragedy, well, that's
another post....

I fully realize this interpretation may be nonsense, but until I read
Bruces' explanation of the song, who knows...

I'd say there is a reasonable chance that is the case, it's the only
thing that came to my mind. Of course it could be meant more metaphorically somehow.

I think it would just be meaning that we could end up as a lifeless
planet as Mars appears to be. Presumably from the usual stuff -
pollution, war, nukes, global warming, cosmic collision, etc...

i never came up with any other meaning for the song. the "face" on mars has
always been somewhat of a enigma; is it really a face, or is it just a freak
occurrence? i don't think it you are way off base with your assumptions.

could be anything...could even be the nomad died in the desert in the desert
sands he loved so much and its his face sticking out of the sand

Neither, I guess. It was Viking's (the satellite) poor image quality
which lead a lot of people (especially UFO believers) into thinking that
it really was a face. It's not.

NASA has a lot of pictures of this "face", and you can easily see that
it's not a face at all. Haven't got an address right now, but a search
for it at http://www.google.com should help. --

Agreed. Having looked at LOTS of pictures, it bears a passing
resemblance to a face and nothing more. It certainly isn't an enigma.
If you stare at clouds for long enough you can form images in your
mind from them - I can, it doesn't mean the cloud I saw yesterday was
the mystical prescence of a giraffe floating over my house. It might
have looked like one, but I somehow doubt London Zoo are filling them
helium and flying them like kites!
